Brown Chances? Will Chance Back!

Hi all,
I am currently a Junior from Minnesota getting into the college search. I have a deep interest in Computer Science and the Arts, so Brown comes to mind as the perfect match. I have some questions about admissions and would like some opinions on how I could be a stronger applicant.

Stats:

EC's: For my extra curriculars I am trying to express my love for both technology and the arts. Steve Jobs is one of my heroes (reading his biography had a huge impact on me), I might write about that in my essays but it seems like a little bit of a cliche.

-FIRST Robotics: I am a programmer for my team, getting better at C++ everyday. Its a lot of fun and our team is pretty good. I also do some programming on my own with HTML/CSS and C.

-Student Government: I am Student Body Secretary this year, and will be running for Student Body President next year. I enjoy being a leader at my school and it is always exciting.

-Art: At my local Art Museum (contemporary) I am a Teen Arts Ambassador for my high school. I curate a teen exhibitions, lead tours, and get the opportunity to meet a lot of artists. I also teach Kid's Camps during the summer and have tons of volunteer hours (250+). I love art and am quite talented, but I don't want to pursue it as a career.

-Cross-Country: (3 years) Varsity this year, captain next year. PR 5k 17:59 (soph) I don't know if I could get fast enough to run at Brown or anything.

-Nordic Skiing: (2 years) Not extremely good at this, but I really love it.

-Track: (3 years) Varsity, but I really don't like it - thinking about going out for rowing?

-Link Crew: Welcome crew for Freshmen, etc.

-NHS

Questions:
Will being from Minnesota help in the admissions process?
Will getting a 4 on APUSH hurt my chances?
Will getting into Brown with Computer Science be easier than getting into say, Cornell?

Anyways, sorry for the super long post, if you can help me with any of this, it would be REALLY appreciated. Thanks guys!!

I don’t think 4 on APUSH will hurt your chances. 4 and 5 on AP exams are considered really good.
I think you have a decent chance at Brown, but you will need higher ACT scores.
I’m not really familiar with the Ivy League (I’m from the Midwest), but I don’t think being from Minnesota will give you that much of an advantage, but it definitely won’t hurt you. I also think that Brown Computer Science might be harder to get in.

Also, nice PR for 5k

Your test scores and junior year grades are some of the most important things on your application, so we can’t adequately chance you until next year. You’re on the right track though! :)

1.) Being from Minnesota won’t help.
2.) At Brown, they consider 5’s good, and 4’s and 3’s to be just okay. Not gonna hurt you, though, as long as you don’t get a 2 or under.
3.) In 2012, only 8.9% of applicants got into Brown, while 18% of applicants got into Cornell. Cornell’s wayyyy easier to get into. (I hope these two aren’t the only schools you’re applying to, though.)

So far, your courses, ACT scores, GPA, and extracurriculars look pretty good (although I noticed that for 2 of your french courses, they aren’t Honors, which is bad). But Junior year is considered the most important, and you’ll need to step it up if you want to maintain your GPA. (I used to get all As, but then my grades took a nosedive during Junior year because I took too many APs and jobs. o_o Try not to overload, I’m warning you.)

It’s also hard to say if you’ll get in or not, because we don’t have your junior transcript or SAT scores. Take the SATs asap, but it looks bad if you retake it more than 2 times; for the schools you’re applying to, SAT scores of 2000+ are ideal. But according to your ACT scores, I think you’ll do good on the SATs, which are considered easier. Also, try to take some subject SAT tests, those will help. (I didn’t and now I’m regretting it.)

I’ve seen some profiles for kids who have gotten into Cornell, and you’re pretty much on the right path, I don’t know as much about Brown though. They all had very strong essays, so so must you.

Finally, you can use a chancing calculator at ■■■■■■■■■■, which is pretty helpful. It only factors in your GPA, SAT and ACT scores though, but there’s also a scattergram showing the scores of other students and if they got in or not.

I’ve kinda been rambling, but anyways: your test scores and GPA are most important. However, I’ve read that a great essay can carry a student from the wait list to the acceptance pile, so work on it.
DO IT.

To the above posters, AP scores arent considered in the admission process. I think i say this a lot but…
The only way to not get in for sure is to not apply.
You have as good of a chance as anyone. A 33 on the ACT is good. Bottom 25th for stanford is 30 so i imagine browns will be around 30 too. Probably less.

I was thinking that Brown might be easier to get into for Comp Sci because Cornell’s is much higher ranked. I know the general acceptance rates.

Will being from Minnesota help in the admissions process? It’ll give you a bit of an edge against a privileged Northeast kid (such as myself)
Will getting a 4 on APUSH hurt my chances? No, as long as you get 4 and 5s on your exams this year.
Will getting into Brown with Computer Science be easier than getting into say, Cornell? Cornell’s Comp Sci program is certainly more prestigious, but Brown has a lower acceptance rate, so I think it sort of evens out.

As for your chances, as long as you keep up your grades junior year, I’d say you have a fair shot.

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1543428-chance-me-georgetown-nyu-cmu-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thanks, would it improve my chances a lot by applying early decision? Also, would it help for me to provide a portfolio of my art?

bump10char

Applying ED would definitely increase your chances (esp. at Cornell, though I know you’re mainly considering Brown). This should help: [2017 Ivy League Admissions Statistics | The Ivy Coach](2017 Ivy League Admissions Statistics | Ivy Coach)

Only include an art portfolio if it’s amazing. Get it checked over by art instructors or teachers you know, and they should be able to best advise you.

If you apply ED Cornell you are more likely to get in than Brown, and AP scores will not make a huge impact. I read somewhere that 11% of your admission is decided on AP scores, so if everything else is good, you should be competitive. Being from Minnesota doesn’t help or hurt. Chance? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1544121-chance-duke-ed.html</a></p>

I feel that you should go for Brown. Although Cornell’s acceptance rate is higher, they do have a lot of competitive applicants for comp sci in comparison in which they don’t have as much. You are definitely a strong candidate. Good Luck!

I think you are pretty competitive for brown, but your act scores, as others have said are a bit low. Get up to around a 32-34 and you should be around the middle 50 percent.

Minnesota might help a little bit, but not much.
A 4 won’t hurt your chances
I would suggest applying to brown because there are fewer comp sci applicants.

Chance back?

You’re a great applicant, but I would still consider Brown a reach just because you don’t really stand out in the applicant pool. Chance me back: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1545023-4-1-gpa-2300-sat-chances-will-chance-back.html#post16305918</a></p>

Thanks for the opinions guys

Could someone give me a percent chance of acceptance if I were to apply ED?

Early decision always helps for ivies! I don’t think being from Minnesota will help too much, but computer science as your interest at Brown might help. The 31 ACT hurts you, so make sure you get that 33. EC’s are good, but Brown and Cornell would still be reaches for you, like everyone else, but you have a good shot please still apply!

Chance back?

Hi everyone, so totally changing topics… Harvard had a freshman class consisting of 8% from the Midwest and only 2% were CS majors. Is this beneficial to my chances because they don’t have many, or does it hurt me because Harvard takes so few? Thanks in advance!
