What are my chances for CalTech and Harvard?

I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA. Here are the honors/AP courses I have taken all three years and the classes I'll be taking this year as a senior:

Honors Biology- A/A
Honors Geometry- A/A
Honors Trig/Pre Calc- A/A
Honors Chemistry- A/A
Honors English 11- A/A
Honors Physics- A/A
AP Statistics- A/A (5 on AP Exam)
AP Calculus AB- A/A (5 on AP Exam)

Senior Year Schedule:
AP Physics
AP Chemistry
AP Calculus BC
AP Literature

ACT: 29

Extracurriculars: Captain of the Varsity Soccer Team (been on team 2 years), Varsity Track Team (4 years), Spanish Club, National Honor Society, Senior Class President

Unfortunately, about zero percent. Your ACT is far below even the average score, and your extra curricular activities are average. What are you interested in studying? What can you afford? What kind of campus environment are you looking for? Answering these questions can help others to aid you in finding a school that matches you.

No chance whatsoever at Caltech. More of a chance but still very low at Harvard. If they really like your essays and recommendations, Harvard might give you a shot but Caltech would never risk letting you in because it honestly doesn’t sound like you’d graduate with the curriculum here.

I agree with the other posters, you have a very tiny chance, particularly with the “average” EC’s. Do you have any notable awards or other things you didn’t mention on your application?

For example, I had a 32 ACT, qualified to USAMO, won Div. 2 at 2011 Natl. Scrabble Championship, vice-president of NHS, straight A’s/valedictorian and got waitlisted → rejected from Caltech.

Moral is, if you apply to Caltech and Harvard, make sure to step up your application, and definitely apply to some safety schools.

No chance at Caltech, slim chance at Harvard if you can write an excellent essay and have great recommendations. But your ACT score will pull you down at every top college, so definitely retake.
