My S has 4.0 unweighted GPA, 2400 SAT superscore(800R,800M,700W on one test and on second test 750R,760M,800W). AP tests 5 on Bio, Math2, physics, and US history. SAT2 on Math2-800, Bio-800. He will take SAT2 Chem and Physics in October. He has minimal extracurricular except for Research at Temple university this summer and missionary last 2 summers to Mexico and S. Korea. I graduated from Caltech myself years ago and his Stats are much better than mine. I think he has excellent chance to Caltech but what do you think?

If those are the only EC’s that he has, he has a poor chance. Caltech wants to see extensive involvement in math- and science-related activities.

Most likely acceptance at CalTech

He will probably be National Merit Finalist. Will this help in admission process?

^ No, not really. Does he have any other EC’s?

I would say that he has a great chance at Caltech. As silverturtle did mention, he does lack math/science-intensive ECs, but his staggering academics are quite competitive. That + legacy status should get him in.

It’s not like his ECs are bad or anything. The research is a good thing and the whole abroad thing is very great. Just make sure he gets his passion for science/math across in his essays.

I continue to be less optimistic than the other chancers unless he has EC’s that you are not mentioning.

Is there passion in science or mathmatics? Yes the scores are very, very impressive. Yes, there is a legacy component. Yes, he seems like a very intelligent boy. Can you tell us more? Scores and grades are just a portion of the application. Until then, I can say it looks promising, but not much after that.

Does Caltech even consider legacy?
