Hi I just recently began considering applying to W & M and wanted to know what my chances were... Until now I've mainly just been looking at DC schools but figured I wanted to look around a little more..

SAT: 1980 (CR-620,M-700,WR-680, E 11) I'll probably take them again this October.
GPA: UW about 3.3 with a strong upward trend, our school has an odd gpa system but class rank is about top 10-12% out of 413.
APUSH sophomore year, got a 4 (only 1 ap allowed soph year)
AP US gov and Eng. Lang junior year... waiting on scores
AP Stats and French Lang next year..
our school doesn't offer too many ap courses.
oh and i took calculus as a junior but only college prep.

principal EC's: (i'm assuming this is my strongest area)
United States House Page (pageprogram.house.gov) summer 2011, i assume the admissions rep knows what it is but basically it's a program for about 70 high school students from across the country where we live and work in washington on the US house floor assisting in legislative duties..

Class of 2012 president (9-12)

NHS member (11-12)

Founder, High School Teenage Republicans Club (TARS)

Some brief other info..

Eisenhower Leadership Award through West Point Society
Student of the Month

i guess that's all i can think of off the top of my head, some advice/comments would be appreciated!

oh and if I do apply it would be early decision, which I believe is fairly beneficial at WM from what I've seen!

thanks!

Glad to hear you’re interested in W&M. Applying ED can absolutely be beneficial if W&M is your top choice (ED is binding so you have to enroll if admitted). It’s easier to stand out in a pool of 1100 (our ED pool size) as opposed to a pool of nearly 13,000 (or pool overall with regular decision).

Sounds like you have some very strong credentials. Are you in-state or out-of-state? Remember, we are a public university so we are more competitive for OOS applicants.

Some thoughts on your schedule, are you taking math your senior year? AP Calculus or AP Stats would both be good options. Also, you said your school doesn’t offer tons of APs so we will absolutely take that into account but so far all of your APs are in the humanities. If there are any math or science APs you could add to your schedule that would make your transcript that much stronger.

If you do apply ED, since you are on the cusp of the top 10% we’d recommend submitting first semester grades so we can see if that upward grade trend continues.

We are familiar with the Page program and your extracurricular activities are very impressive.

Have you considered coming to campus for an interview this summer ([William & Mary - Summer Interviews](http://www.wm.edu/admission/interview)). Interviewing is optional but it’s a great way to add your personality to the application.

For more on any applicant’s chances, check out our Admit It! Blog ([W&M Blogs Chance Me](http://blogs.wm.edu/2010/12/14/chance-me/))

I’m out of state from Pennsylvania. I’m taking ap stats next year since I already took college prep calc this year. I am taking honors physics next year and have always taken honors/ap except math. Do you have any other advice?

I appreciate all your help!

As an out-of-stater, it is in your best interest to take the SAT again (or to try the ACT). While standardized testing is only one part of our process, 1320 is a bit below the middle 50% range for OOS students (1380-1430). We combine your best individual sections in to your best composite. You can learn more about how we review standardized tests via one of our recent Admit It! Blogs ([W&M Blogs Your Four Hour Record on a Saturday Morning](http://blogs.wm.edu/2011/06/14/your-four-hour-record-on-a-saturday-morning/)).

We would also recommend taking another AP your senior year if it’s available. We like to see you increase the rigor of your course work from year to year. Your’s has remained more steady than not (1 AP to 2 APs to 2APs). If however 5APs is maxing out the curriculum offered at your high school that’s fine.

Make sure it’s clear on your list of ECs that you’ve been class president all four years. That is quite an accomplishment.

The other advice we have we posted previously. Consider coming down for a summer interview between now and August 12 and apply ED if W&M is your first choice.

Best of luck!

I’m probably applying W&M RD! Maybe we’ll be seeing each other on campus! I’m also out of state too! Your EC’s look great, but just to reiterate what the admissions officer said, you should really retake the SAT or try the ACT, some kids do find that to be easier! Where else are you thinking of applying? Good luck!
