Hi there.
I am trying to apply for MS in CS in the US.
My gre score is 321 (Q:167,V:154).
I have 2 + years work ex in .NET and SQL.
My undergrad percentage is 84% (which roughly comes upto 9.2 CGPA).
I have no research papers published.
Could anyone kindly let me know the universities that I may have a decent chance of getting an admit.
I have been researching quite a bit and I am slightly confused and anxious about this.
Just a few universities which I may have a decent shot at would do.
Thank You.
What kind of degree are you seeking? A research-based M.S. or a professional degree? If the former, then your lack of research experience might hamper you but you have strong academics and should be able to find program. If the latter, it is likely that your work experience will be a plus and you will getinto a pretty good program.
In both cases, expect to self-fund the degree.
Looking around it seems that a CGPA of 9.2 is somewhere in the A- to A range of GPA. There are dozens of computer science departments with an MS program, though, so you’d have to be a bit more specific about what you’re looking for.
I basically am looking for Coursework and not research oriented. I am not thinking of any specific branch. I want to do MS in computer science - general. Not specific to any particular field.
Thank you very much both of you.
If you could suggest a few universities would be a lot more helpful. All the research I have been doing so far has given me mixed results.
Moreover My official scores indicate 321 and AWA 4.0. (Dont know if that makes a huge difference.)
Thank You very much.
321 on the GRE is good and will not hurt your applications. As @juillet says, there are many, many good CS programs and you need to do the leg work on your own. Any suggestions would just be a shot in the dark. Think about the location, the size of the program and what outcome you seek and then start listing the programs that you are interested in. For a professional program, it is important to know if you have a particular specialization in mind because programs have different options and not all programs will have the option you desire.
You can certainly choose some of the usual suspects to apply to but they often have very low admission rates becuase they have so many applications. The trick is to find a couple of solid programs with good outcomes where you are likely to be admitted. This will give you options.
Alright. Thank you very much. I will filter my research to certain specific fields and try it out… Then again I guess we all have to depend to an extent on different forums and experiences of past students and alumni etc to really take a clear cut decision. Thank you very much for your tips.
When you have a list, then check back in and I am sure you will get more specific advice.
Actually I do have a preliminary list in mind. I plan on applying to TAMU,Stony Brook New York, USC, UW Madison, Georgia Tech, Arizona State University. I am getting mixed results on the chances for Admit to these universities? Do you have any advice on my chances for these universities. All are coursework and not thesis related.
There’s nothing specific we can really say about your chances, because it depends on a lot more than your GPA and your GRE scores. Your statement, your previous experiences, and the people you’re competing with are other things that matter. Also, a 321 is a good combined score, but your quantitative score matters a lot more - for a good computer science program I’m guessing you’ll want to be in the 165+ range.
You’ve got a good range of schools - Georgia Tech being top 10, USC and UW-Madison both in the top 20, and TAMU, Stony Brook, and Arizona State in the top 40-50ish. Assuming that the rest of your application is pretty outstanding, you’re probably a relatively competitive candidate for most of the schools - most of the applicants at Georgia Tech and maybe also USC and UW will probably look a lot like you, though, in terms of grades and GRE scores.
Thanks a lot. I did not realise Quant 165+ was mandatory. I thankfully have 167.
yes yes I have specifically chosen the ranges of schools so that I get picked up somewhere. The only problem is if all doesnt go well I could be rejected by all and I cant put a safe bet on any college I presume.I am working on a decent project right now at work too. Hopefully my sop and lor will make a difference. Thanks a lot everyone for your help. fingers crossed I get somewhere decent .
