Chances for Columbia or NYU?

I'm going to be a senior this year and am very interested in both Columbia and NYU.
My classes include:

Sophomore:
Pre calc, Pre AP English II, APUSH (5), Art I, Acc. Chem., French II
Junior:
Physics, AP US Govt (5), AP Calc AB (5), AP English Lang&Comp (4), French III, Drawing and painting

UW GPA: 3.94 Weighted GPA: 4.22

My weakest point is probably my ACT score, which is a 27, with a 10 on writing.

I am apart of the speech team (4 years), beta club (VP), NHS, student govt, NAHS, and women's leadership board. I also attend this mock govt conference every year and I have attended another leadership conference in DC this summer. I'm starting a project this year to help raise money for world-wide poverty. I recently interned/shadowed my city's govt system.
I plan to take on an independent study of arabic.
I wish to study political science and IR.

I realize Columbia has low chances, but what about NYU? Also, I will be applying early to one of them, just haven't decided yet.

In all honesty you’re right that Columbia is a stretch. NYU is a possibility, but still a very competitive school to get into - you can qualify across the board and still get rejected just because there are soooo many other applicants just like you. To put it in perspective, NYU has an acceptance rate about 3X the size of Columbia’s. I had a 28 ACT, was in NHS, NAHS, Editor-In-Chief of my school newspaper, did sports teams year-round, had a 96% average, with a total of 7 APs (all 4s and 5s) - and got waitlisted at NYU. It sucks but it’s the sad truth about college admissions today. If it does help though, I have a friend who applied early decision to NYU, with similar grades as mine, and got in. I could be totally wrong to say it’s easier to get in early decision, but if you know you would attend if you were accepted and are prepared to receive practically no academic scholarships ($60,000 a year - it’s hefty), then it just might be the right move.

Forget about Columbia, and applying to NYU early. Your ACT is on the lower end of NYU, but still possible.
