Chances for Cornell & MIT

Hey All,

This is my first ever post on this site, and I just want to thank everyone for the useful insights that have helped make the looming threat of applying to colleges much more palpable.

Anyway, I was wondering what chances I have at getting into MIT or Cornell. My mom works at Fordham University which means that I will be able to go there for free, so I'll basically just be applying to Ivy's since getting in there will be the only case in which my parents would be willing to pay for college.

My PSAT (taken as a sophomore) wasn't great. I got something like a 178 because I messed up pretty badly on the English part, which is actually one of my strongest subjects, so I'm not really sure how it happened. However, on the last test that we took in my Princeton Review class, I scored a 700 on Reading, 580 on Math, & 650 on Writing, which I believe is a much better of representation of my skills & weaknesses.

On the PLAN (practice ACT), I scored a 27 out of 32, with my estimated Composite Score range for the actual ACT being 29-33.

On the first SAT Subject Test that I've taken so far (World History), I scored a 770.

Lastly, during my first two years of high school, I've taken the most difficult classes available, and ended up with my unweighted GPA for freshman & sophomore years being about 3.5 & 3.8, respectively.

My extracurriculars include writing articles for Bleacher Report, producing gaming & technology videos for my Youtube channel as well as my website, designing games, and doing some community service at a soup kitchen near my school.

Thanks to all who read this post and sorry for making it so long!

To early to tell, but for Cornell you need to be in at least the top 10% to be competitive; hopefully your GPA places you there.

For MIT, you better have really near perfect sat scores, taken advanced math and science classes (not just AP but college level such as multivariable, linear algebra, etc) and won or placed in some state and/or national competitions and you may be in the running.

From what you said though, it looks like you will have no chance of getting into MIT. The kids who get into MIT aren’t getting 580 on practice SAT math sections, even as a sophomore. Cornell doesn’t look too hopeful either unless you really improve your grades and do really well on the sat (at least ~1450 critical reading and math, Cornell doesn’t look at writing)

Your GPA is a low for Cornell and MIT. You will need to make sure that you focus on getting good grades the next year especially and into senior year as well. Your SAT is a little low as well, 2200+ is ideal for both, especially MIT. The ECs look decent though I would try to get some more leadership positions in organizations along with some more community service. It is awesome though that you are producing your own stuff and I’m sure that some great essays can be written using that info. Keep the upward trend going the next two years and Cornell and MIT could be possibilities!
Thanks for the replies!

Over the summer, I’ll be prepping for both the SAT and my courses in junior year, so hopefully I’ll end up with a GPA of 4.0 and >1400 on the SAT (Math & Reading).

Your ECs are interesting, but your academic performance means you probably won’t get into either unless you suddenly get really good at math and get a 4.0 junior year taking some of the hardest courses you could possibly take.

For schools like MIT and Cornell, it’s not a question of getting a B in an AP class vs. A in an honors class. They want an A in an AP class and that’s that. IF you put school first priority, you might be able to scrape up enough to get into something like UCLA but that’s probably the best your going to get. Sorry to be harsh about it, just honesty.

This all being said, you probably wouldn’t even fit in well at MIT. If your CR and W scores are so much above your M score and you took SAT II WH, you should look at more liberal arts type of schools (there are plenty of liberal arts schools that are much better than Fordham but not nearly as hard as Cornell level)

Also, just one thing to note, MIT is not in the Ivy League (it’s a sports conference including Harvard, Princeton, Brown, UPenn, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth and Yale)

Chance me back?
