Hey guys, I just finished my junior year.
Alright I go to a pretty competitive private school in south-eastern Wisconsin and I am taking some of the hardest classes offered there.
ECs:
MMA club anti bullying community outreach organizer
Varsity football 3 years
Some volunteer work in the west bank
1st place spanish oral contest 2 times
1st place in other even once
Junior Class "Good Person" Award
Have a job at a learning center tutoring kids and grading papers.
My Cum. Gpa is around a 92 (3.7ish) unweighted(my school doesnt weight grades)
I'm pretty interested in biology and I think I might want to go into a public health career. Emory is great for that because of all its research tools and its co-op programs with the Atlanta CDC which is like a block off campus.
SAT IIs
Chem:690
MathI:560( idek)
Bio: with honors bio experience)650

I just got my first SAT score back and did kinda mediocre: 590CR/580M(forgot about the guessing penalty/ 590W)plan to take again

Thanks will DEF chance back

Like what others had said, your GPA is fine but your ACT scores are on the low side. I believe the middle 50% is around 29-32 for 2012 and you can expect it to increase slightly.

However, you lack focus in the EC even though MMA club is pretty unique (Huge MMA fan here lol). I would advise you to find an EC relevant to your major or something that you are truly passionate about.

I would say your chances aren’t very good for now, but don’t give up. Instead, be more motivated to work on those things that you are lacking.

we have very similar stats and emory was my top choice as well at the beginning of my process. i soon learned that the average person who gets accepted to emory has a 94 uw average with a high 2000’s/31 on there standardized test. i say if you can get your scores up to a 30/2000, then you should apply ed to give yourself the best chance of being accepted. good luck!

Brush up your scores, GPA and you will be fine. However, don’t just stick around in CC asking for advice. Try to evaluate yourself, and see what your interests are, what kind of person you are and so on. Then, try to connect that to your interests in biology and health.

Pure guessing:
Judging from your ECs, perhaps a good essay choice would be your concern from those in need. Think about the way you treat people, feel empathy, and write an essay out of it. See if it works.

I would say retake the ACT. Frankly, a 28 isn’t bad at all. However, if you study up and get a 30+, your chances will significantly improve! Right now I would call Emory a reach, but just a few tweaks and it could easily become a match.
