I am a high school junior and I would like some input and suggestions on my chances of getting into George Washington University.
GPA Unweighted: 3.8866 (prior to junior year)
GPA Weighted: 4.0551 (prior to junior year)
ACT: 29 Composite, 35 English, 32 Reading, 27 Science, 23 Math, 09 Writing (I plan to retake, hoping for 30+)
PSAT 11: 1230 Composite, 670 Reading/Writing, 560 Math
I have not taken the SAT yet (I am January 20)
For the first semester of junior year, my weighted GPA is 4.249.
I have taken 3 honors classes and one AP class (AP European History) during my first two years of high school. I got a 5 on my AP Euro exam. This year I am taking three honors classes (American Literature, French IV, and Actor’s Studio), one AP (United States History). Additionally, I am taking Political Science 101 and 102 through Kenyon College (this has an AP weighting on my GPA and I receive 8 college semester hours). I have As in all of my accelerated classes. My senior year, I plan to take one honors class, two APs (US Government and Microeconomics) and an additional class through Kenyon College (Introduction to Theatre).
Extracurriculars: I extensively participate in my high school theatre department. I am an Honor Thespian in the International Thespian Society and I am the secretary of my high school troupe. I stage manage all productions at my high school. Additionally, I have a varsity letter in drama, as our department has roughly the same time commitment as most sports teams (at least 18 hours a week, 6 months a year).
I also participate in Model United Nations and I am the Vice President of my high school’s Gay Straight Alliance. I have a summer job at a summer theatre camp for young kids in Brooklyn, NY. I will be applying to be a member of the National Honors Society.
I am intending to apply as a history major with a minor in political science. Thank you for taking the time to assess my chances.
Edit: I am taking SAT Subject Tests in US History and World History in June 2017.
You’re in a pretty good place.
Your chance are great… only you can limit you - you personal statement is a key part of the application process. what have you overcome to achieve the GPA, are you an active member of your community? Also, PSATs (SAT/ACT) are only part of the picture. Keep up the grades and focus on who you are (personal statement) you need to make yourself standout.

I’ve had bad luck so far with my college acceptances (denials from Vanderbilt and UVA/deferral from Georgia Tech), so I’m starting to get a little nervous. Any insight would be appreciated!
I just transferred to GW. I think you have a pretty good chance. GW is optional for test scores and they mainly look at extracurricular, involvement in the community, and of course, grades. I didn’t do so well the semester I transferred from a state school, and they still accepted me. Make sure your essay makes you an interesting candidate. Student involvement is huge here; students as new as freshmans start internships their first semesters at places like the Capitol and various embassies—even if they aren’t PolSci/IA majors. Good luck!
