Chances for Harvard EA and YPMS RD

Background: female, Romanian, immigrant, from Arizona (lol, if those help at all), large public school

Rank: top 10% (but kind of low rank because I moved and none of my credits transferred from 9th grade (btw, rank is 46/700+))
SAT: 2270 (800M, 730CR, 740W)
SAT II: 800 IIC, 730 Physics, and I'll take Chemistry and maybe U.S. History in October
ACT: never taken (should I take it?)

E.C: Math Club treasurer (11th), president Science Research club (12th), hopefully founder and captain of Science Olympiad (12th), president of community service club (12th), NHS Community Chair (12th), Tennis (10th), volunteer at after-school center for underpriviliged kids (11-12th), Mayor's Youth Commission (11-12th).

I suck at competitions
AMC 12B: 119.5
AIME:4
a few small math awards
Multivariable calc./diff. eq. Student of the Year
a few small writing awards (mostly essay contests), nothing major, though.

Research in bioinformatics (11th), ISEF Finalist 2006 and 4th place team Grand Award.

Attended PROMYS 2005
Attending RSI 2006 - major hook, I guess

I'm applying to Harvard EA and MIT, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford RD (and maybe some other schools as well, depending on the EA decision). I would appreciate any input regarding my chances :). Thanks!

Your stats are great and match a lot of students accepted (and rejected). As far as stats go, I think it'd put you in the running and they'd decide based on personal qualities shown through essays etc. Considering the fact that you selected five of the most selective schools in the nation, I'd say reach, reach, reach, reach, and reach. According to most people on this board, a rank outside of top 5% (35/700 and above) would hurt you.

On a side note, out of curiosity, do you actually like all five of these schools or is it for the sake of applying, and possibly getting into, HYPMS? I ask because when I think about some schools (MIT), the seem to be opposite in atmosphere to others (Stanford).

I wouldn't bother with the ACT, your SAT's great.

What do you want us to say? Yes, you will get in or no, you won't? Be honest with yourself, you're a smart girl. We don't know anymore than you do. I’m sure you've seen stats of admitted and rejected students similar to yours.

I’m not trying to be rude or anything, but, with all the "CHANCES AT HYP" threads floating around, it should be easy to see if you fall in the running or not (and you do, obviously). After that, it is up to what we don't see: the completed application, essays, recs, and the inner workings the adcoms' brains.

Good luck and apply to other top 25 schools (a safety as well).

Listing RSI makes your application make an entrance with psychedelic flashing lights. It will give you a higher probability to get into MIT definitely, and for all the other schools you're applying to also. Plus you have pretty fantastic stats and ECs.

Murasaki: My rank certainly looks bad, but hopefully my counselor can explain it (I switched schools after freshman year). Do I actually like all five schools? lol, ehhh...I really like Harvard, Princeton, and MIT more than Stanford and Yale, but I like Stanford and Yale more than Caltech, Duke, etc. Thanks for your help!

amina: Thanks, I know you're not being rude. I have seen a lot of people's stats on this forum, but to me none of them look like mine. Self-evaluation is very hard, and like others on this board, I often rely on others' opinions to help me make some decisions.

schrizto: Thanks :)! RSI, a 3-page application, is indeed my biggest accomplishment, lol.

And I forgot about AP classes:
AP Calc BC (5)
AP Physics C (3 :( )
This year: Multivariable/Diff. Eq., AP Chem, AP Stats, highest level offered in French at school (7-8), AP English, APUSH. Also took Linear Algebra 1st semester at local state university and probably taking 2 more math/science classes next year.

Did you get the notion that i think you have a decent/good chance for at least one of the schools, though? :)

you will get into MIT, but not the rest
good luck

^Hahahahaha

Like anyone can even know that.

Make no mistake, OP, your stats rock (and I'm sure a GC explanation would be fine). You have a chance at all of those schools, but given the acceptance rate it's impossible to have a great one, which is why I think it's funny someone would assume you're rejected or accepted from a school. Good luck.

You have a solid chance.

Your stats qualify you to apply to any college in the US. However, as you will note from admit threads on CC, there are students with equal - or better - objective stats that have been rejected from HYPMS.

Find a rolling admissions school that you would be willing (or even happy) to attend. It will give you level of comfort if Harvard EA doesn't work out....while you wait until April to hear from the other schools.

My friend went to RSI. If you do well, you're guaranteed into MIT. As for Harvard and the numerous others, I'd say it's a crap shoot. Several thousands have stats like your's if not better. What makes you any different? And I suggest some safeties, too many people overestimate themselves.

reach at all of them. hopefully romanian and arizona are considered underrepresented.

Thanks.
Is there anything I could do that might raise my chances (like get more awards/volunteering hours)?

Your stats are already good enough so you'd have to do something major to raise your chances IMO.

Yeah, the RSI is good. However, i'm under the impression you're applying to schools only for the name? it seems like you're into math/science, so make sure to add some schools with good math/science programs as safeties.

What is RSI? Ignoring RSI, I would find MIT questionable since a 3 on ap physics and a 730 on sat phsyics shows weakness in math and science.

You have a much better chance at MIT than at Harvard. Harvard likes well-rounded applicants with talents in music, sports, etc., in addition to strong academics. The ones who got in that I know of, either play music instruments at state or regional level or placed top at state level sports meet. You could secure MIT EA and then take chances at Harvard RD.

since when did a 730 on ANY SAT II indicate weakness???

Apply to Michigan or some other top rolling admissions school and get an acceptance under your belt. You can do that and apply EA at Harvard. After you have one in the bad, it makes the others easier which ever way they go. Get your RD apps done and mailed before EA is announced.
