Are you sure that you want to come to the socialist motherland? You’ll easily get into McGill. It’s not hard at all. Even if you were just an above average student you would likely get accepted.

They have a 46% acceptance rate, and Canadian students are quite lazy compared to American ones so your competition won’t be much.

Your GPA is just fine for McGill but what major? Chancing for McGill is very major-specific, and non-holistic (unlike UBC or whatever school you might get in at home, which are, most likely, holistic). For some majors you are a low match but, for others, it is a reach.

I am considering one in either history or anything international. haha, I know that is kind of a broad spectrum, but it’s what I thought… As well, what is the acceptance rate for an American at this school. I go to one of the best High schools in my state so it is very competitive.

Like 95% for you. Speaking from experience, Canadian universities are easy to get into. When I applied to one of the top ones, I opened the online application, submitted my twelfth grade marks, checked off a few boxes, and hit the submit button five minutes later. I applied to one honors department (I left the two back up ones blank), and I applied to no other universities. Higher education is generally not good in Canada (depending on what you are studying of course). That is why I am hopefully transferring to the US next year.

If you can afford it, try for a good American university. I have no idea why you would be drawn to McGill for history or international studies. I could see if you were interested in their special undergrad medical program.

I know that McGill is best for biology or biomedical engineering (the ones who get into McGill in these two majors from the US are competitive for “reaches-for-anyone”) but history, really?

Your chances are best if you can either score at least 670+ in each SAT subsection or 29+ on the ACT with each subscore at 26+. Then and only then can you consider McGill a low match (if you’re OK with McGill as a low match).

@1ZN9MY9RC most Canadians are proud to be Canadian and believe that top Canadian schools (McGill, UBC, Toronto) are excellent schools. johnb45 is an exception.

@john There is a lot less variability between the quality of Canadian Us vs. American Us. If the top Canadian Us were in the US, they would be “reaches-for-anyone”, albeit among the largest such schools.

For an History major, McGill is $17,200 a year plus room and board. A typical school of that caliber (unless a SUNY, or maybe CUNY, school is at McGill’s level for history) would cost a lot more than $17,200/year…

haha, @Catria, thanks, and that is exactly why i am attracted to McGill, because it is cheaper. But what do you mean when you say it is a low match? how hard is it really to get into?

I gave you advice as to what to do in order to get into McGill. But as you stand now, your file is a reach for McGill. Unless, somehow, a high GPA can compensate for the subpar (by McGill standards) SAT scores.

It’s amazing how small of an increase can change everything for that one school…
