Chances for Merit Scholarships

Hi! I’m sort of new to College Confidential, but I’ve been stressing about getting accepted into college with no debt afterwards. I will be a senior in high school in the fall, and I plan on majoring in math/comp sci in college. I’m looking at schools anywhere on the east coast or in the northern midwest (Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan). I live on the west coast so if I can avoid being over here for four years in college, that’d be great.

This post is sort of asking two questions: What decent schools that have math/comp sci programs offer full-tuition/ride scholarships to top students, and would I be competitive for them? Here are my qualifications:

GPA: 4.0 UW, school doesn’t weight but I’ve taken about half of the classes with honors

SAT: 2350 with 770 CR, 780 M, 800 W
ACT: Haven’t gotten the score back yet, but I’m expecting 34-36.
SAT Math II: 800 freshman year
Will take the SAT II in Physics in the fall, expecting a high score.
PSAT: 221, probably will qualify for the NMS as the highest the cutoff score’s been is 218 a couple years ago.

APs:
-Calc AB freshman year, 5
-Calc BC sophomore year, 5
My school doesn’t offer any AP classes, so I prepped for both of these myself (I know it’s a little weird to have taken both AB and BC).

Course rigor: I’ve taken about half of my classes with honors (about 80-90% of core classes with honors), and I’ve been taking math classes at my local college since sophomore year. I’ve taken Calc III (A-), Diff Eq (A), Linear Algebra (A), and Calc IV (A), and plan to take Discrete and Complex Variables next year, along with Introductory Chemistry at another college. My school also offers courses through a program at another university, and I’ve taken History 101 and 102. I can also take Writing 121 through yet another college if my schedule allows it.

Activities:

  • Science Bowl every year, captain junior year and will be captain senior year. We got 12th place out of ~70 teams.
  • Science Olympiad sophomore and junior year, captain junior year and we got 3rd in state after not placing in years.
  • Varsity cross country every year, will be captain senior year. I’m decently fast and could potentially run on a team at a smaller university (time currently is around 17:40 for a 5k but that’ll drop to below 17:00 senior year).
  • Varsity track every year
  • Jazz band every year.
  • Piano since I was 5, practice about 10-15 hours per week, plan to compete in the fall (I’ve never been competitive).
  • Played in the school musical on short notice for volunteer hours.
  • Two internships at a research hospital, 40 hours per week for the first one and probably 20 hours per week for the second one (it’s this summer).
  • Will be in NHS senior year.
  • Occasionally attend GSA meetings and plan to organize events this summer and in the fall to get more involved.
  • Occasionally tutor math/SAT.

So again, I’m asking which good schools that have math/comp sci programs offer full-ride/tuition scholarships, and would I be competitive for them. Thank you so much, and if any clarification is needed I will gladly give information!

Boston University has the Trustee Scholarship and Northeastern University has the Scholars program. Both are full tuition. BU has a separate application for the scholarship, Northeastern does not. Both schools are strong in CS.

They are highly competitive awards but your profile would put you in the running.

Are there any specific scholarships you’re looking at?
