Chances for Midwest Engineering Schools.

I made a similar chance thread to this before, but some of my data was wrong and I've made some school changes.

Colleges:

Illinois Institute of Technology
Purdue University
University of Wisconsin - Madison
University of Illinois Urbana Champaign
University of Michigan (I'd kill to get in here)
Northwestern (big big reach)

*Location: Chicago, IL
*Gender: Male
*Ethnicity: African American
*School: #3 High School in Illinois. Magnet school.
*Intended Major: Mechanical Engineering

*UW GPA: 3.3 (It hurts just typing it. But it was not gotten from laziness...I work really hard :()
*W GPA: 4.1
*Class Rank: School doesn't tell us our rank (I think to prevent students from sabotaging one another).
*ACT: 30 (E:31 R:32 M:29 S:27)
*APs: European History (3), United States History (4)
*Senior APs: Physics B, Human Geography, Spanish

*Schedules: (students take 6 courses a year, including required graduation stuff like art, music, and gym)
*Freshman Schedule: 1 honors course, no APs (all I was allowed to take)
*Sophomore Schedule: 3 honors courses, no APs (again, all that was allowed for me to take)
*Junior Schedule: 4 honors courses, 2 APs
*Senior Schedule: 3 APs, 2 Honors courses

AP Physics B
AP Human Geography
AP Spanish
Honors Calculus (had to take Precalculus over summer, so school will not let me take AP)
Honors World Literature
Band (required music credit for graduation)

*Extra-Curriculars:

unior Varsity Baseball: 9,10 (Yep that's it. Although I've been playing since I was 4, the game just wasn't fun anymore and I chose not to try out the next year. I would've made it too.)

*Volunteering, Programs, Etc.:

-Worked for school program called "Freshman Connection", where incoming Freshmen take classes in the summer to prepare for High School. Paid position.
-Volunteer work for Le Penseur Youth & Family Services, which helps inner city youths and adults get education, find work, etc.
-Applied and accepted into the University of Michigan Summer College Engineering Exposure Program. 10 day program which lets students live on campus and work with actual Michigan faculty. And it's free :D

*Essays/Recs: I think it's a bit pointless to list whether my essay will be "good" or not because I think everyone is going to say their essay is good. I really like auto racing though, and will likely write about that. My grandfather and I attend NHRA drag races and NASCAR races annually. And last summer we went to Quebec to see the Grand Prix Du Canada Formula One race. My grandfather loves Lewis Hamilton (because he's black lol). It was the best thing ever.

As you can see, my unweighted GPA kills me. I take the toughest classes that my school will allow me to and although I try my best, I wind up with a lot of B's. Plus my school is very stingy with the A's. In most classes 93 and up is an A but some teachers make it 95 and up. I just wish it could be 90 and up like grade school...that'd be so nice. Also my ECs are pretty weak. A lot of the clubs at my school are just uninteresting, and I'd rather not join them to pad my app and be miserable. I qualified for NHS but didn't want any part in it.

Also, do public schools even consider race? I read somewhere that publics aren't legally allowed to base admissions on race. But then again, Illinois has that huge clout scandal going on so who knows what factors go into admission...

I'll try chance you back if you put a link in the thread, although I don't know very much about the whole college admissions process myself, so my information might not be very valuable.

bump

10char

they do consider race, but they cant make it a deciding factor, like affirmative action was. the supreme court ruled against it at some point in the past.
I’ll tell you right now, you’re unweighted GPA w/ class rigor won’t hurt you, itll only place you lower against other applicants. It certainly doesn’t stop you from the schools on your list. You’ve got good ACT scores ( what is your writing btw?- state schools like that stuff), obviously class rigor can be shown, admittedly weak EC’s but state schools are number games really. You really want to make sure your putting a lot of work into your essays and making them golden shiny. so here’s the chance based on what I’ve seen in my research of these schools, since Im heading midwest as well.

Illinois Institute of Technology- this will be a high reach since their average GPA is a 3.9,
Purdue University- match, ACTs and GPA in general match up here. along with rigor.
University of Wisconsin - Madison- slight reach only because of the state you live in, WI and MN get reciprocity but nobody else.
University of Illinois Urbana Champaign- reach in state. great school to aspire to though.
University of Michigan (I’d kill to get in here)- U Mich is a high reach. they are purely numbers and essays.
Northwestern (big big reach)-unfortunately yes. I know someone with your stats who got in but they had Ec’s coming out of their ears and volunteer efforts all over the place. EC’s is your main downfall here. but I say why not try for it?
chance back and good luck

writing was 8, combined english writing was 29 :</p>

Thanks for the chance I’ll see if I can help you

no one? :frowning: It’s only 6 schools.

I guess people only respond if you’re applying to HYPSM, so they can tell you that you have no chance :D.

I agree with the previous poster but on a more moderate level. I think that the schools will consider your 4.1 and realize that you have taken more difficult courses as someone who just took normal ones and got a 3.8 or 3.9. This is what I think:
Illinois Institute of Technology- low reach/high match(their average gpa is 3.7 and average ACT is between 25-30, which you exceed:)
Purdue University-match
University of Wisconsin - Madison-low reach/high match
University of Illinois Urbana Champaign-low reach
University of Michigan-mid reach
Northwestern-reach
I think you have a good chance of getting into some of these, and I would still apply to your reaches, you never know. Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the response Warts. I’m really praying that I can at least get into U of I. My high school sends a ton of kids there and I’m hoping that will help me. As long as I can get in there, I won’t feel as bad if I’m denied from Michigan and Northwestern.

Have you thought of applying to Marquette?

They have an excellent engineering program, with coop and internship opportunities.
