I feel like the fact that you’re considering Dartmouth means that you wouldn’t mind it? It’s easier and definitely attainable. Despite the GPA, you have a high SAT and seem like a unique international student.

Chance me back? I’m in a similar situation (low GPA, high SAT and great EC’s)
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pennsylvania/1541557-chance-wharton-ed.html

livinglively: I’m not international. I went to high school in Maryland, New York and now Ohio.
I wouldn’t mind Dartmouth at all! In fact, there’s a lot about Dartmouth that I like better than Penn. The downside is that I’m a city person, but I’m not going to choose based on where the school is.

(Dartmouth 3, Penn 1)

EDIT: I also just want to thank everybody who’s replied to this for thinking (or at least pretending to think) that I have a chance. It’s really encouraging and helpful. Honestly, I’d probably have psyched myself out and ended up not applying to any of my reach schools without this website (although seeing some people’s stats does make the competition seem way out of my league sometimes).

Update: I’m kind of leaning towards Dartmouth, but I’ll be visiting them both (I’m so excited-- I’ve been saving money up for this for so long. I LOVE road trips.) in mid October.

Penn is obviously going to be a reach for almost anyone, yourself included.

I’d say if you’re applying to a specific school (Nursing), your chances are slim but still somewhat existent. As you noted yourself, the 3.6 may be a dealbreaker, but don’t worry - I also have a 3.6 and a 2220, so I think are somewhat similar in that regard.

For CAS, you have more of a chance than at any other Penn school, but again, with the acceptance rate so low and reserved for the cream of the crop, anything but ED will be next to impossible. If you are truly determined to go to Penn, I say go for it, but if not, then I would suggest finding another school that would be a better fit for you.

Chance back?

There aren’t any gaping holes in your application that would make you a noncompetitive candidate (a 3.6 isn’t great, but it’s not the the of the world), but at the same time nothing really jumps out me in terms of academics or extracurriculars. Like you said, that gap in junior year really hurts just because it’s a lot of lost time and opportunity.

I’d say still apply though. The situation you’re in with a lot of school transfers could lead to a really good essay on the topic, and I’m sure your teachers will address it in their recs as well. Penn is a reach school for anyone, but your app looks competitive enough. Your essay is definitely where you want to put in the most work, though.

Chance me back? :)

GPA is definitely a problem—transcript is a lot more important than test scores.

Penn is probably low reach. Good luck bro.

As for which ED to pick, don’t pick it based on whether you think you have a higher chance at one or the other. Pick ED based on how much you like the school, because ED is a binding contract.

Thank you all so much!

Bump for the morning

You have a pretty good chance at UPenn. You do not lack at any aspect, but at the same time you do not have another hooks. And remember no one has their shoes in at Ivy schools.
Good luck!

65 percent for getting in. Give me an acceptance percent here.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=16395061

Wow that’s pretty high. Total confidence boost. Thank you both.

You appear to have a great background, and if that 3.6 is your cumulative and you have taken all those AP classes, i’m sure your weighted GPA is much higher, possibly over 4. I spoke with an admission officer from our universities in California, and they stated that passing AP exams doesn’t increase or decrease your chances of being admitted, it’s just a bonus for you.

But that may be different from where you are coming from.

I would say that you are at a high reach for Penn, I mean you’re almost a perfect SAT guy. That’s a great achievement.

Please chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1555452-chance-ucla-ucsb-uci-ucsd-ucd-stanford.html

Haha I don’t really understand that post. (I’m probably just being thick.) A high reach means almost out of reach, but the rest of your reply sounds so positive. Thank you, though. Yeah, the AP’s are tricky because fresh/soph years I couldn’t take any (IB school). It’s not so bad, though, because my GPA those years was a 4.0. I’m working on getting my grades together to find out about my weighted GPA.
Thanks for the complement! (Just an aside, I’m not a guy. People usually come to that conclusion when I say I play ice hockey, but it’s not the case.)

Bump! (10 char)

Bump again…

Oh what the heck. I got into Penn with a roughly equivalent GPA so it’s not a deal breaker, especially since you have AP classes to top it off. Problem is that the only cohesive theme in your app is that you’re really freaking good at ice hockey and it’s not like Penn is all about that. I mean, you have a good shot, but it’s going to be weird when you’re applying for Chem and you have liberal arts teachers writing your rec letters. I honestly don’t know if there’s anything you can do about that though…

On an unrelated side note, why Penn for chem? Unless you know for a fact that you want to do nanotech/material sciences, in which case f yeah go Penn, it’s probably not the greatest place to do chem…

I would say Penn is definitely a reach. It seems like ice hockey is your “thing;” if you made that really stand out, you would have a better chance!
Chance back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1556040-eh-why-not-chance-me-ill-chance-back.html

Edit and bump:

Updated GPA’s:

Freshman year: 3.90 UW 4.05 UW
Sophomore: 3.61 UW 3.78 W*
Junior: 3.22 UW 4.05 W*
Senior: 4.00 UW, 4.66 W

OVERALL: 3.7 UW, 4.12 W

ALSO, I just looked on the college board website and realized that my SAT score is higher than I thought (2350!!! (not superscored!!)) which is really great news because I’ve been wishing that I had a 2350 for months. So excited about this! There are no words, only exclamation points.

*Bear in mind that a) my junior year there was a lot of family/personal/financial conflict that involved my being homeless for a time and some other personal stuff and b) my freshman and sophomore years I attended a very competitive IB school, in which we were not allowed to take any honors/advanced classes (they bent the rules and let me take one each year) and c) I’ve gone to three different high schools

(Just a quick aside: I don’t plan on mentioning everything above on my application. I don’t want to sound like I’m looking for pity or making excuses.)

LILB: Penn for chemistry because I love Penn, and their chemistry, while not the best of the best, is still phenomenal. I’m also still considering Dartmouth ED. If I could, I would apply to Harvard, Stanford, etc. but there’s just no way I’d get in and I’m alright with that. So Penn. I’ll look into getting a rec from my current chem. teacher, but I don’t know about it. I’ve only been taking his class for three weeks, and while I think I’ve made a good impression and I’m confident that I’ll maintain an A(+?) in the class, I don’t think it would be appropriate.

Reason for edit: additional information, response to LILB

Bump! I’d love to hear a couple of opinions in light of new information (sorry for keeping this alive for so long)
