Chances for Phillips Exeter/Andover

I’m applying as a 9th grader for 10th grade at both Exeter and Andover. I don’t expect to get in, so you’re welcome to be as brutal as possible. I go to a public school, but it’s a highly competitive one in the middle of a very competitive and academically centered region.

I have all A’s, my school system (Chapel Hill, NC) no longer has A+'s or A-'s, but if they did everything would be an A+.

I’m taking (and these are all honors classes): Advanced Pre-Cal, Band, English 9, Biology, Gym, World History, and Spanish 3.

I’ve played tennis for about three years now, and although I’m not close to being the best, I’m slowly getting better and higher up in the “ladder.”

I’ve done Science Olympiad for the past three years, and I was in Varsity for 7th grade and 8th grade. Here are some state medals I won:
7th Grade:
3rd in Road Scholar
7th in Experimental Design
My other two events I got within the top fifteen, but no medals there

8th Grade:
4th in Experiment Design
7th in Road Scholar
Top fifteen in my other event. Did worse that year individually, but my school got 3rd overall, which was pretty exciting.

I have participated in somemath competitions:

7th grade:
21 in AMC 8
96 in AMC10

8th Grade:

20 in AMC 8
102 in AMC 10.

There are also a few small things, like Regional and State Math Competition awards, but I won’t bore you even more with those. Nothing really “wow” here, I know.

I’m also part of the debate club, and NC is one of the best regions for my area of debate (Public Forum). I’ve participated in only a few tournaments, and haven’t won anything in those, but I am slowly getting better, and I hope to at least place in many upcoming ones.

I play chess, and my rating is 1193. Not really much else to say there.

I do a little bit of computer programming, and I’ve learned Java and Java Script by myself, and I’m currently trying to write my own little apps. I have no idea where thats going to go.

I invest in stocks, and I’ve made a fair amount of money from that. I don’t know if that matters at all, but anything to stand out, right?

I took the SAT in 7th grade, getting 1940. This was enough for National Recognition.

I recently took the PSAT with this years 11th graders, and scored a 215 (76 Reading, 80 math, and 59 writing). I know my writing score is pretty horrible, but it’s already gone up a considerable amount in my preparation for the SSAT.

On practice tests for the SSAT I scored, at my lowest, a 2200, and my highest a 2360. I have no idea how I’m going to do on the actual thing, though, but I hope I’ll do well.

I’m a white male born in the United States from a family of immigrants. I don’t need any financial aid.

I write well, I guess, and I had a little but of help with my essays from my brother who is an excellent writer and currently attends Dartmouth.

My recommendations should be pretty good, I have a good relationship with all the people I asked. But that part isn’t really in my control.

Sorry if I left out anything important, if I did or you’re wondering about something then please feel free to leave a comment.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the long post!

EDIT: I forgot to mention, last year I got the highest score in the state for the National Spanish Exam for Spanish 2, and I received a gold medal in that as well. And my family immigrated from Albania, not a a spanish-speaking country, so I don’t have an advantage from that.

Oh, and I forgot to mention. I do a lot of volunteering, and I received an award this past summer for getting 100 or more service learning hours throughout the summer (Mayor’s Award). I also volunteer at my schools Homework club, tutoring students in math and anything else they want to work on, and I also volunteer at a local center for underprivileged hispanic kids. I tutor there as well, and my interviewer seemed really interested in it.

Another edit, I’m so sorry. I finished the math and reading programs at Kumon, and in math I finished 7th out of 8000 kids in the higher levels of the program. I now currently work there as a paid instructor and grader.

Everything looks good!

Thanks, mathman!

You sound like a really good candidate. I am not an admissions officer but, you sound really good. The fact that you don’t need any financial aid whatsoever really boosts your chances! I think that you are a great candidate! Chance me?

@lagann46 hey, I am from Albania and I live in Shkoder. I am planning apply to Phillips Exeter, too. Good luck body

I would be pretty surprised if you didn’t get in to at least one…always nice to see another math competitor on CC, too

Wow! So many ECs! Looks like I’ve got a super tough crowd to compete against for the admission spots… Good lucj! I think you have a pretty good chance!

I’m currently an upper (junior) at Phillips Exeter. I’d say: you are brilliant, much smarter than me. But Exeter received applications from tons and tons of brilliant students. So I must ask: why you? Why should Exeter say yes to you? In all honesty, I don’t see a clear reason from what you have given. Everything you do is “good.” But nothing stands out. I’d say don’t lose hope–you definitely still have a shot. But oftentimes to get in, you need a “hook” and I don’t see one
