I'm a homeschooled student, and I've heard that, as a result, my SAT scores are much more important. I got really high scores on my math/CR (well above the average for my reach schools), but I only got a 720 in writing... and even that was slightly boosted by my essay, which got a 10/12 (without it, I think I scores ~680 or so). I was really disappointed, because the writing was way below my average practice test scores (all my other standardized test scores have been well ABOVE my average practice test scores). Is it worth retaking the SAT to try and boost my writing (but which would involve having to study for math and CR, since I don't want to completely bomb those sections)? Or would those be sufficient to get into, say, Princeton, Dartmouth, and Yale?

It would not keep you out if everything else is stellar.

A retake wouldn’t hurt your odds, even if everything else is stellar.

UT84321: Would NOT retaking hurt my odds?

edit: I also got a 790 in Lit SAT II, and 5s in AP Eng Lang and AP Eng Lit, so there IS proof that I can write . I just had a bad day on the SATs…

As Redroses puts it, it wouldn’t matter too much if the rest of your profile was strong and stand-out.
Welcome to CC, by the way.

I’m in essentially the same boat. Don’t worry, a 720 in writing isn’t any kind of red flag for admissions.
