Chances for Rice / Harvey Mudd

Right now I'm am a high school junior, but i figure I might as well start early on improving my college resume. I am interesting in both Harvey Mudd and Rice University right now, and am curious what sort of improvements I would need to make to improve my chances of getting in.

SAT
Math 740
Critical Read 690
Writing 640

GPA Weighted 4.1
Unweighted 3.9

EC's: Boy Scouts (Life Scout)
Varsity Cross County Captain, Made it to CIF State Championships twice
Varsity Track and Field Captain, 4:25 mile time

I'm am not sure if the sports will factor in as much as I am relatively uninterested in continuing to run during college.
Also, I am going to re-take the SAT's in March to see if I can get everything over 700.
Any comments would be appreciated.

Also, how would my chances be for the Air Force Academy?

I'd be most concerned with getting your writing score up - you are in the bottom 25% at both Rice and Mudd in that subject. But many probably had a score like that on their first try and improved it after studying and retaking.

Air Force isn't really all that selective academically but there are other requirements, like getting nominated by a congressman. Being Eagle probably helps with that.

You shouldnt have a problem with Rice. Harvey Mudd is a tough one though. show them you want to go there and you'll get in

Thank you very much for your input.

I only know about Rice, I applied ed.

Rice cares a lot about Geographic diversity, so the farther away you live from Houston, the better. Try to show interest in the school, visit it, interview with an alum, stay over, sit in a class, etc. I don't know if your school ranks, but try to be in the top 5 percent of your class, thats anther thing thats important to rice. Since your still a junior, try doing research over the summer to increase your chances.(rice seems to like professional research) I would suggest retaking the sats to get that critical reading score up, your math score is fine, writing should be fine if you could get it up to a 700, I know Rice only looks at Critical Reading + Math.

I was rejected from Rice E.D. I live in Houston, I had a 3.8 gpa....1470/1600, 2170/2400 sat score, and was in the top 20 percent of my class ( my school is compieitive, rice knows that since 15-20 kids get into rice every year from my school)...Good Luck....

Anyone who thinks the military academies are not that selective academically should try to post that comment on their forum site here and see what kind of reaction you get. From the AFA website relative to how they did in high school: "The average of recent entering classes is the top three percent".
