Chances for SCEA

Anyway, my stats are:

SAT: 2080 (CR: 640 M: 730 WS: 710 -- i expect this composite to go up at LEAST 100 points on the October test)
ACT: 35 (writing scores haven't been released yet for June)
SAT-II: pending, but I'm expecting 710-750 Lit and 740-780 IIc
GPA: 3.85, and have taken the most demanding courses available to me (5 AP's on my schedule for next year, 1 Syracuse University course and 1 SUNY C.W. Post College Course)
i am white, although i am a second-generation israeli, and am a citizen of both the US and Israel (speak fluent hebrew)

a lot of more or less worthless clubs (i.e.: forced to take marching band as a club while in band, quite playing lacrosse after 3 years), however, high up position in my school's model UN club, won an outstanding delegate award at the University of Chicago's annual MUN session.

i play multiple instruments and recieved a perfect score on the highest level (6) at NYSSMA (actually, that was in 8th grade too haha), which is New York's musical achievement testing.

i have been selected for prestige in painting (although this was early in high school).

i have worked for all of high school at two different jobs, at least 10 hours a week.

i have interned for the presiding officer of the local legislator for the past year. (>50 hrs total)

i will have 2 or 3 quite good reccomendations from 2 or 3 teachers that know me quite well, as well as an additional reccomendation from the presiding officer of my county legislator.

i am a member of the national honor society as well as the national spanish honor society.

Essentially, Stanford is the school I want to go to. I love the campus, I love the school, I love the area, I love the state, I love the people. I have visited and was in awe the entire time. I have recently established a "relationship" with a professor at the school through e-mail (nothing significant--merely e-mail chatter). I plan on applying through their Single-Choice Early Action program, and I of course plan on applying to other additional schools but I'm quite unsure as to what my chances are. Of course, I know that schools such as Stanford and Brown and Cal and UCLA have been quite sporadic in their acceptances, and it's hard to tell how one will do over the other. But if you could give me an idea of how I would do, I would truly appreciate it.

Thanks for your time.

I think you are a very unique candidate, particularly for Stanford's applicant pool.

I wouldn't compare Stanford admissions to UCLA or Brown, since Stanford is far, far more selective and amongst the 4 or 5 most selective universities in the US. You seem to have a chance and applying SCEA is the best stratergy.

Interesting EC's...very different.

If you raise the SAT to 2200, you have a very good shot SCEA.

My question is, do you even think it's necessary now with the 35 ACT?

Yes, I think Zephyr overlooked that. Your ACT score is a whole lot better than your SAT score.

I think you might be okay for EA.

Alright. I'll retake the SAT anyway in October. Thanks.

Any other opinions??

The 35 ACT is good, but you'll still want to retake the SAT I because they'll see that score when you send the SAT IIs and that 640 could hurt your chances. Also, I'm not sure what your plans are language wise, but if you don't want to take them in college you can very easily waive the requirement by taking an SAT II language test and getting a decent score (540 for Hebrew). Also, a good score (750+) would help your chances.

Some things you should know: Stanford doesn't look at freshman grades (hopefully this will boost your GPA). Also, they give very limited space for activites and ask only for ones during high school. You should send in tapes and/or drawings in the fine art supplement, they can boost your chances.

Your stats are a bit low, but I think your ECs can make up for that--provided you can provide a clear picture of yourself in your essays since all the different activites make it seem like you just joined clubs to pad your application. If something is unimportant, don't list it. You have a chance, but Stanford is a very selective school. Good luck.

Would applying SCEA benefit me in a big way? Because after Stanford, my top choice would be Yale, but people consistently tell me that applying SCEA to Harvard or Yale is not a huge booster at all, but what about Stanf?

Applying SCEA is an advantage; I think Byerly posted somewhere that Stanford, Yale, Harvard, and Princeton fill 48% of their classes early, making acceptance rates much higher for people applying early.

ramsfan,

Byerly has pointed out that HYPS fill just under 50% of their class early. Additionally, a number of the deferred SCEA applicants get in during the regular round so the number is really up between 60%-70%. I'll let Byerly speak for himself but I think he has said that counselors who do not recommend applying early somewhere are failing their clients.
