I am being redistricted so I am going to try to get into TJ for Sophomore year. I am Currently enrolled in all honors, Pre-IB Algebra 2/Trig, Spanish 3, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Band. I have all A's except in Spanish (B). My PSAT score is 164.

I would have to say this is a place where chancing is my area of expertise :). Froshmores are actually pretty rare, we usually only end up having 25 or so every year. That sounds like an ok record, though the PSAT score is not good, I would not submit that. It is kind of hard to say without knowing how you did first round, but I would say you have a much better shot than most. Don’t feel bad if you were rejected your first try, so was Adam Hood one of my class’s geniuses.

dear tjkid,
are you a froshmore? i heard theres a suggested minimum of 2100 to be even CONSIDERED for sophomore year. if not a froshmore i was wondering could you name some of the courses offered at tj they are known for? this is a random question but thanks anyway!

good job, but honestly, 164 is a little too low for tj. students who are accepted are around 195 or higher, but there’s no score limit. they consider everyone, so go for it?

So I’m a current froshmore at TJ. There are only fourteen of us this year. As you know there are only as many froshmores admitted as there are freshmen who drop out. I had some of the lowest PSAT/SAT scores of the group- 196. It’s recommended that all people have a combined math and reading score above 1300 (Mine was 1310). Final grades tend to be all As, but I had As every single quarter. Personally, I think the essays matter the most. Yes, they will except people who write generic things, but really you have to be different. TJ wants to hear that you’re a good person, not that you’re a nerd.

This is what you do if you’re accepted as a froshmore:
Sign up for summer computer science immediately. Cancel all summer plans because, believe me, you want to have summer before junior year free for internships and what not.
If you are going into Precalc or higher and have not yet taken Algebra 2 you will have to sign up for an online class and take a test in August.
You have very few options on taking courses. You’re electives will be gone since you have to take Design and Tech. All froshmores are in the same tech class. The only way to get into a class that is vital for sophomores (e.g. AP Bio or AP Computer Science depending on what tech lab you want to do) is to take a year off from a language. Also, there is some confusion with placing froshmores in history classes if you are from an IB school or another county.

General Idea: SCORES DON’T MATTER TOO MUCH, ESSAYS ARE THE MAIN THING!!!

And one quick thing - I want to skip precalc and go to BC next year - any advice? Should I do it? ( I love math and find that this year was so easy it was boring, and precalc seems like a waste of a year)

I’m also from Lake Braddock. Believe me, it’s not a bad alternative. If you don’t get into TJ you will be at the top of your class. Generally the skipping precalc thing is only available for students who took Algebra 2 at TJ, not another school (I’m actually taking the test since I’m in alg2 sophomore year). However, they may make an exception for you. If you are allowed to take the test just email me at nerdness.owns.u@gmail.com. Also email me if you do or dont get in… I think I have a lot of advice for both TJ and Lake Braddock students.
