I will be applying for admission in the fall of 2015. Will be finishing up my last classes for this fall. I have all the prereqs and recommended classes completed for each school.

Stats:

Nassau Community College (2012-2014) Currently 53 credits. Will have 68 after the fall.
Major: Business Admin
GPA(Overall and Major): 4.0
Honors Program

Small 4 year university (2011) 30 credits
Major: Exercise Science. Hated it so I switched majors and went to Nassau for two years.
GPA 3.44

SAT/Act: Not great so I won't be submitting them. Given how many credits I already have, it is optional for me to send them.

HS stats: Again nothing to brag about

ECS: Army National Guard as an Intelligence analyst
Volunteer firefighter
Wall Street Club
Worked as sales rep for the past couple of summers.

RECS: Should be pretty good

Essays: Not going to be great but definitely shouldn't hurt me.

So how are my chances and if you could, let me know what may potentially hurt my chances?

Note: Johns Hopkins does have an undergrad business program but it is very small

Your 4 year university GPA basically killed it for you and without an SAT or ACT even though these schools don’t require it, you’re going to struggle getting into Swarthmore College, Emory University, and the College of Arts & Sciences at JHU. The business program at Johns Hopkins is aimed at adult students and does not attract wall street opportunities so I would recommend against going there if you get in. I will say this, you’re basically in at USC and that is a wonderful school but I would recommend applying to the college of arts and sciences for a degree in economics instead of applying to the undergraduate Marshall business school. If you follow this advice, you will get in.

Thanks for your reply. I do believe it will be tough to get into those schools you have mentioned but do you really think my gpa two years ago in different major will negatively affect it? Also does it hurt me that I would be applying to Swarthmore as an economics major despite taking numerous business admin courses(accounting, finance) but with several economics courses along way?

I was a business major and an MBA, so I’d like to put in my 2c. IMO. you are barking to the wrong tree. A CC educated business AA degree is geared to a business professional(Accountant, Advertising, Finance etc.), it is not intended for an academic Economist. As a result, if you apply for an Economic major in Swarthmore, for example, you may lose a lot of credits, even you can get in.

You should target a “business school”, such as Babson, Bently, Butler and others. You should apply broadly, some good schools like Marshell, Kelly and such, but also some lower ranked business schools because your past 4 years college GPA, some schools may care, some may forget, so it is a roll of a dice in your situation.

I think Swarthmore will be impressed by the number of accounting and finance courses you have taken and it will lift other parts of your application. This may seem crazy but if I were you, I would flat out not submit your 4-year university grades. Colleges always say that you will be penalized if you don’t show them but they have no way of knowing whether you did or not. That would double if not triple your chances.

You must show all the courses taken in an application, otherwise it is going to be viewed as a lie. There is a clearing house for all your past grades, it only takes a second to find out.

I definitely think I should send them both college transcripts. On the application, should I list the 3.44 next to the school or just leave that out? Would it even make a difference?
