chances for swarthmore, pomona, cmc, oberlin...

hi, i'm a junior and i was hoping to get some feedback on where i stand with my college list- as it is now, do you think i have enough matches/safeties?

here's my current list:
swarthmore
claremont mckenna
oberlin
pomona
american
brown
macalester
bard
william and mary

my stats:
-biracial female, competitive public high school
-school doesn't rank, but i'm pretty clearly in the top 10%
-WGPA: 4.3, will be 4.36 by the end of the year
-UWGPA: around 3.8, should be close to 3.9 by the time i apply
-fairly significant upward trend in grades (i'll post them next)
-SAT: 2350
-SATII Math 1: 800
-planning on taking History and French SATs, i'll retake if less than ~720
-ECS: copresident of our GSA, will be vice president or secretary of amnesty international, in photo club and chorus, fairly involved in politics (i've campaigned door to door for obama, volunteered as a poll watcher, participated in harvard model congress, hopefully will volunteer for my state senator over the summer)

does my list look ok? how hard would you say it would be for me to get into these schools? should i add more safeties?

thanks for letting me know! :)

here are my grades if that helps:

grade 9-
H (honors) english: B
H geo: B+
H french II: A-
H earth science: B+
H world history: B+

grade 10-

grade 11 (projected off semester 1)-

H french IV: A-
AE chem: A
APUSH: A

senior year schedule-
H international relations
AP euro
AP english
AP calc bc
AE french V
peer mentoring
bioethics

(all of this leaving off electives: chorus every year, mostly electives in the arts throughout the years, like music theory, photography, etc)

ur unweighted GPA is NOT a 3.8

its more like a 3.6

I think if your essays are spectacular you will be competative at these schools. But i doubt you will get into swarthmore or brown.

Your grades are not spectacular but your sat is, so i would say you are probably midrange grade wise for these schools, which means they will most likely make their decisions greatly based on recs and essay.

Good luck

yeah, i think the 3.8 was calculated with electives…but for most of these colleges my gpa is above average from my school (we have naviance, so i know by the numbers i’m ok-our schools is a lot harder than most publics- i’m just wondering about my chances as a whole). what do you think about the other schools?

oberlin- yes
pomona- reach
brown- reach for everybody haha
macalester- yes
bard- yes

in my opinion^ the others, i’m not sure about the others, sorry. good luck though.

thanks for your feedback! i’m legacy-ish for pomona (my grandmother went there) so i’m hoping that will help me out, and brown is certainly a reach, but i figure i might as well apply

and to give you guys an idea of my high school, i’ll give some stats:
(i don’t want to give exact numbers since i just want to be careful about my identity, but here are some general numbers)
-average SAT around 1870 compared to the national ~1500
-over half of students taking AP exams get a 5

my gpa in relation to others:
my gpa: 4.3 as of now
0-1.99 5%
2.0-2.49 5%
2.5-2.99 11%
3.0-3.49 27%
3.5-3.99 34%
4.0-4.49 16%
4.5-5 2%
so i’m not at the absolute top, but since it’s actually a curve i think it’s safe to assume that i’m in the top 10% of my class, even if my grades don’t look that competitive (not trying to get you guys to change your minds about some of these schools being reaches, i just want to give more relative information if it will help :))

I would say reach for Swat too probably, it is pretty competitive.

Swarthmore-High match
claremont mckenna-match
oberlin-match
pomona-high match
american-in
brown-reach
macalester-high match
bard-dunno
william and mary-high match

im not totally sure on these cause idk much about lac’s sorry :s
but you have great stats

Uh, not to be a jerk, but Pamona ain’t a high match for anyone. Like, anyone. Same goes for Swarthmore.

You’re a good candidate, and I’d expect you to get into a few of the elite LAC schools listed (Pamona, Oberlin, CMC, Macalaster, Swarthmore), but probably not all of them. Brown is a coin-flip and leans heavily on the quality of essays. You’re essentially a lock for American and you’re almost a lock for Bard, I’d say.

Your GPA is higher then mine. but not beast or anything.
But your SAT score will be able to get you a look and chance at any of the top colleges in the nation. Claremont and some of those are incredible schools so go for it.

Really depends on your major and what field you wnat to be in also.

thanks everybody!!
@sloryan13: does major make a difference in admissions? i’m going to major in IR or maybe poly sci if that means anything…

do you guys think that i need more safeties? or is my list ok?
