The schools I'm wondering about are Middlebury, Bowdoin, Colby, Hamilton, and Skidmore. I know they're all reaches to different degrees, but I'm not sure why I'd get rejected. My test scores are in the mid-50% for them and my grades are close to the mark, so what is it?

I think you can be pretty confident in all except Skidmore and Bowdoin, which I would classify as a low reach and a reach respectively.

Nymphadora - you ask why you could be rejected - schools like Bowdoin and Middlebury have very low acceptance rates (19 % for Bowdoin, Middlebury is similar). In other words, 80% of applicants are not admitted and most of these applicants are also highly qualified. Some of the successful applicants - have not only the scores and GPA but also a hook - tipped athlete (selected by a college coach), minority, or very unique skill or experience.

It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply, but, as you will read over and over on these boards, also apply to a couple of true safeties, schools that admit 40 to 50% of applicants or more and that your stats would be in the 75% range.
