Chances for tufts, W&M, cornell, american, umd (college park), and lehigh

<p>Hey everybody, I know that obviously american and maryland are clearly not on the same calibre as, say, tufts or cornell, but I wanted a list with some safetys and reaches. But I am unsure which ones would be almost out of the question, or if I should look at some other schools (I am very open for suggestions). Comments are welcome!</p>

<p>(schools im looking at): tufts, W&M, cornell, american, maryland, lehigh, boston college (maybe), boston university, WUSTL</p>

<p>I am a white senior at a selective college prep school in Maryland. </p>

<p>Unweighted gpa: about 3.69/3.7
Weighted: overall approx. 3.9/3.95 (junior year, which I've been told "matters more", it was around a 4.25 weighted)</p>

<p>*Our school does not rank, but I am estimating that I am 9/65.
(almost definitely top 10%)</p>

<p>Course Selection: I have taken a difficult course load at my school; we don't have many AP's to choose from, and the ones we do are generally math and science oriented (which is not my forte).</p>

<p>Overall, I will have taken 6 AP's before high school has ended, and I think I got a 5 on one this year (a 4 on the other one most likely). I also will have taken 9 honors classes before high school has ended.</p>

<p>My SAT's are decent, but not great:</p>

<p>Reasoning Test: (but will retake next October) </p>

<p>verbal: 690
writing: 720
math: 580 (horrible, i know, but as i said, im going to retake it)</p>

<p>Sat IIs: just took them in june but am expecting 700s on both world history and Literature. Next year I will probably take math I, and get around a 650/700.
(i've heard it's easier than the sat reasoning math section).</p>

<p>EC's: </p>

<p>*Have performed in most of the schools plays/musicals/shows the past three years.
*won a writing contest for poetry
*national honor society
*leadership team" all years of high school
*secretary of comm service club (am running for vice president next year, and have been in the club for all years of high school)
*varsity soccer 10th, 11th, and 12th grade
*debate club for 9th and 10th grade until it stopped (lead one of the groups, so vice pres)
*founded a business club with a friend and competed nationally (although did not win)
*went to senior center and taught elderly how to use computers (and did not earn hours for this)
*facilitated/was on leadership team for handicapped carnival in 9th grade.
*organized a teacher appreciation breakfast in 10th grade for all teachers at our high school.
*a leader of youth group outside of school.
*summer study program last summer at a university
*community service program this summer
*overall, will have accumulated before applying to colleges about 160/200 hours.</p>

<p>College App essays will be excellent (writing is my strength) and College Recs will probably be good too.</p>

<p>thanks for reading all of this: feel free to be completely honest.</p>

<p>SAT is too low for cornell or tufts. EC is decent but not spectacular.</p>

<p>anyone else? sorry its so long.</p>

<p>I'd say you're in for maryland, lehigh, and.. w&m?</p>

<p>A couple of things--Cornell wants you to take the SAT II Math II test, not the Math I test (which they won't accept). And your AI score is only 195--and even if you get your SAT math score up by 100 points, you still only go to 198--meaning that Cornell is probably not going to accept you, since they want someone with around a score of 210 or more.</p>

<p>Now the better news (these are 2005 numbers):</p>

<p>Tufts--average GPA U/W of 3.7 (est.) and average SAT scores of 685/695
W&M--average GPA W of 3.73 (est.) and average SAT scores of 674/661
American--average GPA U/W of 3.47 and average SAT scores of 620/603
Maryland--average GPA U/W of 3.85 and average SAT scores of 615/645
Lehigh--average GPA U/W of 3.7 (est.) and average SAT scores of 631/671
Boston College--average GPA U/W of 3.7 (est.) and average SAT scores of 650/667
Boston Univ--average GPA U/W of 3.5 and average SAT scores of 643/656
WUSL--average GPA U/W of 3.84 (est.) and average SAT scores of 700/735</p>

<p>Your GPA U/W is 3.70 and your SAT I scores are 690/580 (but we'll call it 690/620 with a retake)</p>

<p>So:
Tufts--match to slight reach
W&M--match
American--safe match
Maryland--match to slight reach
Lehigh--match
Boston College--match
Boston Univ--safe match to match
WUSL--reach</p>

<p>P.S. Some of your ECs are not too standard--but I like them--and they show your friendly, appreciative side.</p>

<p>that 3.85 GPA statistic for maryland is weighted I believe</p>

<p>o i might be wrong because.... this says the average weighted GPA was a 3.96 <a href="http://www.uga.umd.edu/admissions/counselor/freshmanprofile.asp%5B/url%5D"&gt;http://www.uga.umd.edu/admissions/counselor/freshmanprofile.asp&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p>

<p>thank you guys for all the help so far, this has really been helpful</p>
