Chances at Columbia, UPenn, Cornell, Georgetown, Tufts, BC

Wanted to have one last chance thread before I start sending out those apps. Thanks in advance for reading!

Here are the schools:
Columbia U
UPenn
Cornell
Georgetown
Tufts University
Boston College
NYU
George Washington U
Boston U
University of Florida

and... here... we... go!

I am...
a senior
graduating from a pretty good public S. Florida/Miami area High School
Hispanic Male. Dominican-American who grew up in the DR (grades 2-7) but was born in US.
Low-Income
a first-generation college student

SAT
SAT I: 770 CR, 780 M, 780 W (took it twice, time before that 2090)
SAT II: Haven't taken them yet. Think I'll be getting 700+ in American History, Lit. and Math I.

GPA
Unweighted: 3.4
Weighted: 4.8

Biggest weakness in my app. However, huge upward trend. It was roughly 3.00 before junior year, then straight A's that year and I' thinking straight A's first semester of senior year. I will have a good reason on what motivated me to change, although not a great one on why I didn't do too well before.

AP's
European History: 5
Spanish Lit.: 3
APUSH: 5
Psychology: 5

Senior year I'm taking English Lit., Macroecon, Us Gov. & Poli., Calculus AB, Statistics and Physics C.

Extracurriculars
President of STAND senior year. Member junior year. It is something I am passionate about. It's a national student organization devoted to bringing an end to genocide, and I attended a camp for all the nation's chapters this summer.

Other than this, member of a few clubs, nothing special.

Essay/Recs
Plan on them being pretty good.

The way I see it, I've got the great SAT scores and good hooks. However, my GPA is an obvious huge hole and my extracurriculars are nothing out of this world.

Thanks for reading and comments are much appreciated!

Your GPA is low, as you’ve already stated, and I think that 3 on the AP might not be too helpful either…
Maybe if you put focus on STAND it will help you. best of luck!
chance back pleaseee? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1208240-chances-please.html

Your SATs make up for your low gpa and the reason why you would get away with that is because you have hooks. Only thing I can say is that your ECs are weak and you really have to use this one club you are passionate about and make it a BIG deal!

How does your school weight?

What do U think about a student who has received average SAT scores of 1500 and average GPA of 3.9 and 3.4

Extra curriculars : President of Fashion Club (started my own)
AFS Host family
Have maintained a Job for the past years
ADV Choir for 3 years
Big sister to Big Brothers Big Sister HS mentor
In freshman year created a bicycle powered water pump to a school in Africa
Receive college credit by serving as a national youth correspondent in the Washington Journalism and Media conference ( got to listen to famous corrrespondents and Pulitzer prize winners speak )
About 200 hours in community service, tutoring and helping special educated students
Currently working on making and selling a school magazine.

^Make your own thread, and don’t hijack others.

The best thing about most of these schools are that they look for past weaknesses on your transcript and see if you have worked hard to correct them. Also, it is a plus your gpa is lower because of the range of scores that schools have to accept to get as many applicants as they have. So many people think that is all about grades, but that just shows how well you can memorize information. I would say that the only thing you can do is to get involved in your community and have a fun senior year! Scores and gpa are attractive, but in the end it is the characteristics of the student that colleges want to see (hence community service, application essays). Embrace your passions, it is the only way you will make yourself different from all of the other applicants!

My school uses a weird way of weighing it apparently. Honors courses are an extra 1.00 and AP courses even more than that I think.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Keep 'em coming! =)

you only have one EC? i think thats your weakness, along with your GPA, nothing you can really do about it now

It is going to be pretty hard with the performance in 9th and 10th with only one year of good performance at this point. You need more safeties. I am actually not sure any of them are safeties in your list.

Since UF should be giving you a rolling admission, you should have applied already to see where you stand.

Your scores are excellent, and I think your hooks (URM, low income, first generation) are enough to make up for your GPA – they certainly won’t overlook it, but you’ve got a lot of other attractive qualities. If your essays and recs are great, I think you’d be competitive at any of the schools you mentioned, though some of them (the Ivies in particular) are just luck of the draw for anyone. I’d say that UF, BU, BC, NYU, and GWU are all either high matches or low reaches, and the rest are mid level reaches. Good luck in your applications!

low income is a hook?

Thanks for the comments everyone, specially because of the honesty. I’m considering switching out GWU for a school that’s more of a safety, and will get started on the UF app soon. Even more comments would be great! :)

Low income works with questbridge applications. OP - are you going to use questbridge match?

From the little research I did on it it seemed to me I wouldn’t be competitive for it.

Bumpity bump bump
