Chances for U of Michigan and Michigan State U?

I am an in-state white male who has applied Early Action to LSA at the University of Michigan and also applied for admission at MSU. I have a 28 on my ACT, and a 3.86 (non-weighted) GPA. I have taken 4 out of the 5 AP classes my school offers, and my school which is very small sends a few students to the University of Michigan almost every year, and about the same to MSU. I am in NHS, and I have played 5 sports throughout high school. I also have done a little bit of community service outside of NHS, and had a job for part of my Sophomore year. I worked on my essays for over a month, and had several educated people read over them multiple times. My brother is currently attending the University of Michigan, and my grandfather also attended the University of Michigan. My mother attended Michigan State University. The recommendation letter my English teacher wrote for me was spectacular, and my mother who is a high school teacher as well agreed that it was one of the best she had ever read. What are my chances to be accepted to LSA at the University of Michigan, and also Michigan State University? Please be specific and honest. Thank you.

Your pretty much guaranteed admission into Michigan State with those stats, so you wont have to worry about that at all. As for the University of Michigan, it’s a bit iffy. Your GPA is right about average (the average accepted UW GPA is a 3.83), but your ACT is below average (the average accepted ACT is a 31). Your extracurriculars are pretty decent, but you didn’t mention any leadership positions, so I wouldn’t expect this to help you. Your in-state and legacy status might help make up for the small ACT deficiency, but Michigan is expecting the lowest acceptance rate in its entire history this year, so I wouldn’t be to sure.

Your in at Michigan State, however, I would say that University of Michigan will be a reach. They are quickly becoming a reach for everyone. Your gpa is solid, which is good because they put a lot of weight into gpa and course rigor. Your act will be the only thing possibly holding you back but I still think you have a decent chance!

Good luck! Keep us updated!
