Comment: I’m an international student from Japan. I focused too much on math competitions, so I was ill-prepared for SAT :( My W/UW GPA for UC is quite low since I took many unapproved online AP classes heedless of my counselor's warning lol

Berkeley: High match
UCLA: High match (can you pay full-freight?)

For Toronto and McGill, your major please…

Oh, I’m sorry, but I forgot to show my major and income bracket. Although I applied to math major for UC schools, I will apply to Bio major for Canadian schools. I can pay full-freight.

You will get in to the UC’s because math is a very unpopular major and you have a very nice math background. The only thing that might stand in your way might be your relatively low SAT and GPA, but then again you’re an international and colleges see that. I think you have a great chance and you don’t need to worry at all.

Thanks so much for your advice. I didn’t know that math major of UCB and UCLA is relatively unpopular in spite of their graduate math-related programs which are ones of the best in the planet. I’m worried about my SAT score because int’l applicants, surprisingly, have higher average SAT scores than in-state applicants do. I have (too much) confidence about my performance in ECs related to math, so I hope it would make me get into these UCs.

I think UCs should not be too difficult. it all comes down to your personal statements. I am not too familiar with Toronto and Mcgill but UCs should be low reach for you:) best of luck!

Worry123- Yes, actually math is not an impacted major, at least at UCLA. Most students go for pre-med oriented majors, such as Biochem, neuro and Molecular bio. For a list of unimpacted majors at UCLA, here is a link:
http://www.smc.edu/StudentServices/Scholars/Documents/Alternate%20UCLA%20Majors.pdf

That sounds great to me, because it means that I have big chance to take lectures of great math profs of UCLA without intense competition. Even if I will be rejected by UCB, there will be no problem.

McGill bio: High reach (CR a little low)
McGill math: High match (in fact list math as a second choice)
U Toronto bio: Reach
U Toronto math: Match

According to the following link, the average SAT score of McGill’s admitted students is 2049 and their average GPA is 3.74, and according to the college board website, the acceptance rate is 60%. (Actually, my friend in U of T also told me this.) Although the rate may be different for int’l students, from these GPA and SAT standards I expected that U of T is match for me.

My SAT is 50 pts. lower than the average SAT score of McGill’s admitted students, so I cannot predict my result for this school. Personally, I think McGill is my high match school. The following link shows the average SAT and GPA for McGill.

Both U Toronto and McGill are major-sensitive, perhaps more than any school in the US… as far as McGill is concerned, the ones at the lower end of the admits were perhaps Arts, agronomy or, as surprising as it sounds, engineering students, albeit EE, CompE or MinE.

[Admission standards (US) | Applying to Undergraduate Studies - McGill University](http://www.mcgill.ca/applying/admissionsguide/standards/unitedstates)

The minimum CR score for all majors is 620 so McGill math is a high reach too, unless you can somehow appeal with a 620+ on CR or a 30+ on the ACT and 26+ on each subscore.

Thanks for telling me that. I will probably quit applying to McGill if I won’t get higher than the minimum. As I checked the website of U of Toronto, the minimum score seems 600 regardless of major, so I will apply to it, anyway.

Hi electricrc68. But in your thread, you said “Then, Sophomore year, I got a couple of A’s, A lot of B’s and C’s, and two D’s.”, didn’t you? Then, you can never get into any of these universities no matter how well you will do. Your future seems even more dire to me.

I think UC’s are a good match. I know a friend who got in with low SAT scores but its more about the holistic profile and a lot depends on the essays.

Yeah I also know a guy who was accepted by UCB with similar situation as your friend’s. I don’t know whether or not my essay was nice enough to be attractive, but if my profile is holistically review, one of UCs will probably accept me, I guess. Otherwise, I will have no chance.
