Hi. I am a high school senior planning to apply to UCSC and UCSB and I was wondering what my chances were for admittance.

Here is my information:

Private High School

Sophomore GPA: ~3.2

Junior GPA: ~3.6

Senior GPA so far: ~4.2 ( It will probably end up being around a 3.8-4.0 by the end of the semester.)

SAT

Combined: 2110

Reading: 650

Writing: 670

Math: 790

Bio: 730

Extracurriculars:

2 years of tennis

Work as an intern at a tech company for 2 summers

~50 hours of community service

Some small club involvement

Does anyone have any suggestions for improving my application? I might take the math 2 subject sat test in October, but other than that I'm not sure what else to do. Thanks!

1) Are you a CA resident?; 2) Have you calculated your UC GPA? You’re probably in pretty good shape for UCSC; if your UC-weighted GPA is over 3.8 or so, I think your chances at UCSB are excellent, also.

I am a Californian and those are my UC calculated GPA’s.

Is that total UC GPA? It sounds like it’s per year basis.

Here is a link to calculate your UC GPA for both Soph/Junior years together: <a href=“GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub”>http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
Very competitive SAT but GPA on low side for most of the UC’s. EC’s look good. Spend time on your essays.
Senior grades will not make a difference for the UC GPA, but will help maintain your provisional admission once accepted.
Intended major will make a difference on your chances and if you plan on going into a STEM major, Math 2 and another Science subject is recommended by many UC’s.

UCSC: High Match
UCSB: Low Reach

I just calculated my UC GPA and it came out to be 3.36. I will probably major in either a STEM major or a social science. Do I still have a fair shot due to my SAT (especially math), despite my subpar GPA?

@CollegeCollege97: With that low of a GPA, you best chances would be at UC Riverside and Merced.
Average GPA for UCM: 3.54
Average GPA for UCR: 3.77

Unless you have a compelling story about your low GPA, your chances at the other UC’s is not good. I would suggest you look at the Cal States such as Fullerton, Sac State, San Francisco etc…

UCSC: Low Reach
UCSB: Reach
