chances for ucsd

I am a junior from California, reasonably competative high school; probably top 4%, although won't know for sure until ELC comes out.

GPA: around 4.6 UC weighted, 4.0 unweighted (challenging schedule), plus a CA community college course.

SAT: 2150, will retake, with hopefully a 150-250 point increase (but is this already enough?)

SAT IIs: Pending

ECs: -section leader in school band
-coprincipal oboist in major youth orchestra
-jv/varsity track for two years
-3 years of robotics (including FIRST events)
-Cofounder of Dissenters Club, club at school to discuss and extoll virtues of political dissent/debate
-NASA online community, a selective program where NASA experts teach and lecture online to admitted students

Leadership: -Founded private charity and website to raise concern for humanitarian and social issues
-As mentioned, bunch of leadership for oboe (instrument)
-Again, cofounder of Dissenters Club
-Probably will start another club begining of senior year

Community Sercive: -400+ hours peer tutoring
-100 hours volunteering at local thrift shop to provide affordable mechandise to the underprivileged.

Other- Some other random things such as a lot of music and academic awards and that I translated a book from my native language into English.

UCSD is probably my 3rd/4th choice, so I was wondering if it would be reasonable to keep it there. Also, will race affect/hurt me?; I am East Indian ethnically.

Thanks

Race isn’t a factor.

I think it’s safe to say that you’re in since your stats are much higher than mine. But who knows how competitive it’ll be next year.

While it’s not necessarily a sure thing you will get in, I’d say you’re a very strong applicant. I’m pretty sure you’ll get in. As for the SAT, the 2150 is more than adequate (although if you want to try for an increase, go for it). I only got 2000 and was accepted. If ucsd is only your 3rd or 4th choice, I would keep it there - it’s a strong back-up option for you… I would count on an acceptance.

You have a relatively good shot. Like ^ said, we cant say for sure b/c we do not know next year’s applicant class, but you should be fine.

If I were you though, I would definitely be looking at schools like UCLA/Cal/UCS above UCSD if you prefer those schools. I also recommend applying to schools such as MIT and the California Institute of Tech. since you have similar (possibly better stats) than a girl who went to my school who got into both (we are one of the more competitive schools in CA). You should especially apply to MIT and CIT because of your program with NASA.

Anyways, thats my 2 cents. Good luck with applications.

you are in for sure.

UC gpa can’t exceed 4.5

… but assuming it’s somewhere near that, you’re in.

^I know UCs cap GPA, but that’s to determine eligibilty only (got this cleared up by a representative). Competative UCs from UCSB and up consider the uncapped weighted GPA most importantly when doing the actual applicant evaluation.

Having said that, my capped GPA would be about a 4.33, if you would like to evaluate based on that.

Thanks for all the feedback, more would be appreciated as well.

I got in with a 4.2 UC GPA and a 1910 on my SATs…I’m sure you’re more than fine.

dude ur in!!

Avib0y - no one calls it CIT. its called Caltech

Brownman— Thanks for correcting me. But at my school people call it CIT. But then again, my school (let alone my city) is filled with a lot of morons.

roflcopter

The average weighted GPA of a student going into UCSD is a 4.0 or 4.1 weighted. The average SAT score is about 1900-1950.

You are just fine, don’t worry about it.

Hi, could you guys chance me?
Unweighted GPA: 3.4
Weighted: 4.08
UC Weighted: 3.72

SAT I: 2320
CR: 750
M: 780
W: 790 (12 on essay)

SAT 2’s:
math level 2: 800
chemistry: 790
us history: scores pending, probably got about 770-780 on this, according to the CC thread on this test

Sophomore year:
Spanish III (taken at community college): A
AP World History: A/A
AP Calc AB: B/B
Honors English 10: B/A
Chemistry: C/C
AP Chemistry: B/B
Wind Ensemble (Marching Band): A/A
(NOTE: I took a very rigorous chemistry class that basically squeezed two years of chemistry, regular then AP, into two semesters of high school. It was very tough, the teacher was super tough, and even though I did poorly in the class, I, as well as many other kids, did extremely well on the AP and SAT Chemistry Exams).

Junior Year:
AP Physics B: A/B
AP US History: A/A
AP Eng Lang: B/B
AP Biology: B/B
Wind Ensemble (Marching Band): A/A
Calculus II (semester-long college calculus class, taken by few juniors and few students in general at my school): A
Calculus III (same story): B

I did a lot better I think my junior year compared to sophomore, although i seemed to lose a bit second semester.

AP Scores:
AP Calc AB: 5
AP World Hist: 5
AP Chemistry: 5 (remember, I got a two C’s followed by two B’s in this subject? this class was f&*^#in hard!)
AP US Hist: Scores coming in July
AP Eng Lang: "
AP Biology: "
AP Physics: "

School: Public (one of the highest ranked in the state, 10 on API score, surrounding neighborhoods are rather affluent)

My schools kinda famous for its academic rigorousness, and its in San Diego, so maybe UCSD knows of it?

Race: Asian-American
(Im in-state as well)

EC’s:
Member of San Diego Youth Symphony (10-12th, first violin)
Volunteer at library (9,10,12th grades, around 100 hours logged)
President/Founder of school’s Taiwanese-American club (sold Taiwanese snacks to raise funds for Taiwanese charity, also obtained flag to hang in our school’s library, 11-12th grades)
Vice Prez/Founder of school’s Young Investors Club (11-12th grades)
Treasurer/Founder of schools Young Writers Association (11-12 grade, planning on holding a youth writing contest once school year begins)
NHS (11-12th grades, member of Executive Committee)
CSF (11-12th grades)
Completed Internship at Reuben H. Fleet Science Center (this museum) summer of 11th grade
Currently Involved in Internships at contemporary Art museum as well as at the city’s museum of history

As a final note, I’m hoping to write my essays on my taiwanese heritage and/or maybe some experiences I’ve had at one of my extracurrics–not too sure at the moment.

I know my GPA is super low, especially relative to other UCSD admits, but I’m hoping desperately that my other achievements might increase my chances.

Thanks for the help!
