Chances for UT Austin?

UT Austin is a dream school for me. Assuming I apply with amazing essays, do you think I would have a shot? Here are my Stats and EC’s:

ACT: 35 Composite/color
GPA: [color=red]3.31W/color
AP’s: Will have taken [color=red]5 AP’s by graduation (AP US, AP Comp Sci, AP Econ Macro + Micro, AP HUG)
Location: I’m from Florida, so I’d be applying OOS
**Prospective Major:**I plan on majoring in [color=red]Computer Science/color

I should also note that I have a significant upward academic trend since my freshman year (shown below):

Freshman GPA: 2.72
Sophomore GPA: 3.40
Junior GPA: 3.82

Extracurriculars:

  • 1. Founded a profitable aerial photography business after my sophomore year.
    2. 3 Summer internship at a Medical Software Company located in Dallas, TX (Sophomore, Junior, Senior summers)
    3. Full-Time summer job as a sales associate and web developer for a local business (Junior Summer)
    4. Full-Time summer job as a cashier/eStore manager for a different local business (Sophomore Summer)
    5. President of Environmental Club (Junior, Senior years)
    6. I offer technology/computer science tutoring to students & elderly in my area (Sophomore, Junior, Senior Years)
    7. Content-Manager for a tech-based blog with 36,000 monthly subscribers (4 Years)
    8. Attended a summer Composition Writing Program at William and Mary
    9. Attended a summer Web Development Program at Columbia University
    10. Attended a summer Industrial Design Program at Auburn University
    11. About 200 combined community service hours
    12. Completed MIT Intro to Comp. Sci online course

There are a few more, but these are the major ones. I plan on discussing that I was not simply sitting around when getting bad grades during my start to high school (In the “Additional Info” part of the app). I also have a medical issue I plan on mentioning that had a significant contribution to my rough start to high school. Anyways… do you think I have a chance? The average accepted to UT Austin from my school is a 29 ACT 3.74 GPA. Also, my school does not report class rank.

Thanks!

Great ACT Score! However your GPA is far below the average students that get in. Also it would be helpful if you have ur class rank. And UT austin barely picks any oos students (low as 9%) so don’t expect to get in with a breeze.

UT only give 10% to OOS, great ACT and Extracurriculars, but no ranking? it will not be easy to get in.

I was just at the Texas Preview and they confirmed that Comp Sci is THE most competitive major at UT Austin.

Being OOS will hurt you and your GPA will hurt even more.

Do you have the financial means of paying for UT? The cost is above 50k a year. Don’t expect any aid.

@Jpgranier Does having the financial means guarantee admission at UT? I’m an international student who’s taken O level (equivalent to US high school graduation) and AS level (first part of A level; college course), with a perfect GPA of 4.0 unweighted (5.0 weighted) but a low SAT score of 1790 (M:650,W:620,R:520) (taken only once). My essays were excellent and so were my extracurricular activities. Prepscholar says I have 52% of getting in with the SAT score and GPA alone. I’ve applied for fall 2017 in late September and later changed the term to summer 2017 on the major petroleum engineering and on the minor mechanical engineering. I didn’t apply for any merit scholarship or financial aid. Despite being an out of state (international) and low SAT score, do I have a shot? The decision is still pending. I’ve submitted in all the applytexas essays even the ones not required and the additional ones too (Stanford Coalition essays), along with solid financial resources.

@sean191297 I hope you have some safeties.

Prep scholar has no way of predicting your chances at UT for so many reasons.

  1. They are talking about the school on average
  2. UT uses only class rank, so your GPA doesn't matter.
  3. It doesn't weigh in the fact that international spots are extremely limited (UT fills their classes with only 2-3% international students).

I believe not requiring financial aid would be beneficial for you. UT is not needs blind, so they take into account your financial need when accepting you. Even that most likely won’t get you into UT.

Petroleum engineering is one of harder engineering majors to be accepted to, but it might be easier right now due to the oil industry not at its peak.

To be blunt, I don’t think you’ll be accepted because of your SATs being very low for UT engineering standards, and being an international student. Do you have other options? If not, apply ASAP; time is running out on applications.

@sean191297 I’d add OU as a safety if you haven’t already. I 've heard they have a great PE program.

@sean191297 @3scoutsmom Honestly, I think he might have to go a little lower for a safety. He has a 26 equivalent ACT, the average at OU, and engineering majors usually have a higher score. Of course, I’m not very up to date on OU admittance though.

Sean, I recommend Texas Tech as a safety as well. They have a good Petroleum engineering program, and their OOS tuition is decently priced at 25k~/year. You may be able to get an automatic acceptance if you’re in the top 25% of your class!

Just noticed that this thread had some activity, so I’d like to update you all @sean191297 @3scoutsmom @Jpgranier @seanjungies @TexasFootball

I was accepted on December 14th into UT UGS (I decided to apply Undeclared as I’m undecided between CS and Business). Looking forward to becoming a longhorn! I can’t believe I applied on the December 1st and heard back only 14 days later. I’m so happy it worked out.

@Spinny99 --congrats!

As a rookie to the whole admissions process I find the whole OOS process so interesting. There are literally thousands of IN state higher stat kids in Texas waiting for an admissions decision and applied back early in the fall.

And yet, UT can dish out OOS admissions decisions in 14 days.

It’s a business for sure.

@carachel2 Yeah the process is definitely strange. It’s just sooooo nice to be done with the process. I truly don’t understand how I got in, but I guess it doesn’t really matter.

Thanks for the help everyone!

@Jpgranier I’ve already been accepted to Penn State, Texas Tech, University of Tulsa, Colorado School of Mines on the major petroleum engineering. I’m only waiting for Stanford, UT Austin, and Texas A&M’s decisions now. I wanna prove everyone that SAT is just a number tbh. OU too accepted me…

You will be accepted.

@gklfajg Are you referring to me? If so, thank you for saying so. However, on what account are you basing the assumptiong on, if I may ask?

You have scores that high, and ECs that impressive? Then denying you would be ridiculous.

I can proudly say that all my academic records and ECAs are impressive, however, my SAT Score is not decent (1790)
@gklfajg

So what? Your ACT is a 35. You’re SAT doesn’t matter
