Chances for UWashington?

Hi there,

I am currently a senior and hoping to get some of your guys' insight. My first choice for college is the University of Washington, and I submitted my application a few weeks ago. For the past three years of my high school career, the school has been considered a strong backup for me because of my high grades, test scores, E.C's and prestigious High school. However, my Senior year has not been going as well so far and its looking like my semester one grades will be substantially lower than in previous years. What I really want to know, given my past and current academic performance, is how much impact this semester will have on my chances at UW.

Here is some more specific information about my academics

Grades:

In freshman year, I had all A's and a few B's in the first semester and then all A's in the second semester
In Sophomore year, I had all A's both semesters. Took two Honors and an AP course, which is abnormally rigorous for my school.
In Junior year, I had all A's and one B in both semesters. I took three AP's and an honors, and the B was in an AP course.
In Senior year, its looking like I will have 2-3 A's, 3-4 B's, and potentially a low C/D (could be high C/B- with some solid luck). 3 AP's.

Senior grades are mostly due to personally issues that I have been experiencing lately, namely depression.

AP courses:

AP Macroeconomics
AP Microeconomics
AP Chemistry
AP U.S History
AP Statistics
AP Calculus BC
AP Computer Science (this is the potential C/D senior year class)
AP Environmental Science

Test Score:

SATI: 2210 (one sitting)
M: 750
CR: 660
W: 800

SATI: 2280 (Superscore)
M: 750
CR: 730
W: 800

SATII: (Don't think UWASH sees these)
Math level 2: 750
Chemistry: 650
U.S history: 700

Awards/Honors:

RPI Medal Scholarship in Science and Mathematics, $60,000 (Junior year)
National Merit Commended Scholar (Junior/Senior year)
American Mathematics Contest- 1st place at the school, advanced to AIME, gained national recognition (Junior year)
Science Department Award (Sophomore year)
Theology Department Award (Sophomore year)
Presidential Service Award (Junior year, given to student with the highest number of community service hours. Cumulatively, I currently have over 900)

E.C's:

-My most important and notable E.C is that, in Sophomore year, I started a business/website with my friend. PeerVids.org is an online video tutoring website that offers textbook-specific video tutorials (akin to Khan Academy) that are created by high-achieving students. It all started when I began making these videos for my school's Physics textbook, and it was received so well that I branched out to math and history and even other high schools around the area, including an underprivileged school district. PeerVids is now the main source of Calculus Instruction at Eastside Preparatory High School, a HS in a low income district.

I have been a part of the Model UN team for two years now, earning honorable mentions twice now after participating in New York and Stanford Conferences

-I have been privately tutoring students one-on-one in science, math, and english since Sophomore year. It has really helped develop my passion for teaching.

-I played Varsity Football for two years, and in my Senior year I was a team captain, Offensive and Defensive MVP for multiple games, and won the All-league second team award

3 years of Varsity tennis

Science and Math teacher at the Peninsula Bridge Program, a summer school program hosted by my school for low-income seventh graders. I was the youngest teacher that the program has ever seen. All other teachers are actually full-time teachers during the year, and all T.A's are HS students. As a HS student for two years I taught a math class of 30+ students and a science lab class of 65+ students. The program lasts for 5 weeks during the summer, and I have done it for 3 summers now. It is very meaningful to me.

I have a few more E.C's, but since I cannot remember them right now they are not too important.

OVerall, I feel like my application without Senior year is incredibly strong for UW, seeing as its rate is just about 60% and my stats are well above their average stats.

However, when senior year grades are sent, i'm worried that a potential D (worst case scenario, btw) will kill all my chances. Is this a valid concern?

UW is my absolute favorite school, and for many many reasons it is perfect for me. My essays for UW were strong and I spent a lot of time on them. I have absolutely no disciplinary history, and I don't plan on having one.

Please let me know what your thoughts are on how this poor Senior year semester will affect my UW chances.

Thanks!

Forgot to mention that I plan on majoring in Philosophy and I marked that on the application. It seems slightly important to me because its a minority major. Possible minor in Math, Economics, or Social Psychology

UWA: Low match

With your test scores, ECs, and all of those AP classes, I would say that the University of Washington is a match! Best of luck! :)

Safety Beotch u Washington belongs to me. Don’t you dare take my spot.

Lol Jk luv ya

So it is still a match/low match even with a potentially poor gpa this semester? I;m not expecting it to be sub-3.0…but still, it wont be the 3.8 I’ve had previously

Seems like a match. You’ll be able to explain the lower grades, if need be.

Chance me! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1588157-chance-umich-ea.html

This post made me laugh.
You’re an outstanding applicant!! Don’t doubt yourself so much! U of Washington has a 58% acceptance rate, and your GPA is above average, AND you SAT is astronomically above average. It’s still a low match for you, no doubt. The C/D would be only be troublesome if you had no reason for it, but if your guidance counselor / therapist / doctor can verify your issues resulting from depression, I highly HIGHLY doubt you’ll get rejected from U of Wash.

^ thanks very much for the support. Its definitely getting me to a more relaxed state as finals approach. Much appreciated.
