Chances for West Point, Virginia Tech, University of South Carolina

Hi, I’m currently looking at West Point as my #1 choice school. Here are my ‘credentials’:
APs: AP Human Geo (4), APUSH, AP Environmental Science, AP Psychology, AP English Language, AP US Gov, AP European History, AP Macroeconomics.
ACT: Only have taken it once, but I got a 31 on it (want to get it higher).
Extra curriculars:
-Cross Country (co-captain spot senior year)
-NJROTC (most likely a company commander senior year)
-NJROTC Raiders/Orienteering Team (lots of medals and trophies)
-NJROTC Officer Junior/Senior Years (not sure what positions yet)
-Student Council
-LOTS of volunteering hours
-Church Youth Group (LOTS of mission trips)

I don’t know if this will keep me out or not, but I’m a sophomore and this year I have a low C in honors alg 2 and a C in entrepreneurship (computer issues for entrepreneurship). But I have struggled a lot this year (mom became unemployed, my parents got divorced, and I came out to my friends and family as being gay). I’ve been severely depressed this year and I’m so worried these low grades will keep me out (class rank and GPA has dropped tremendously, but I plan on taking 4 AP’s next year to bring it back up).

All of your ECs seem very good, as well as your classes. The average GPA for West Point is a 3.75, though I’m unsure if this weighted or unweighted. Make sure to retake the ACT, and possibly the SAT, multiple times, as WP takes your superscore. Register to earn the President’s Award, which is given to those with, in your age group, 100 or more hours of community service. Sadly, it might be too late to register for Boys/Girls Nation or SLE, WP’s summer camp.

Good luck, and remember to start your nominations right now, as you seem to be in Junior year and should have started them much earlier, if you haven’t already. Remember, essays are very important because there are tons of kids with a beautiful resume, but not as many who can really let their personality seep through.
