My daughter had the same thoughts about attending an all girls school until she went to a Bryn Mawr reception in our city and found out the experience of attending a WOMENs College and developing connections that last a lifetime. I live the Bryn Mawr traditions also.

She found similar experiences at Mount Holyoke and Barnard. She applied to all 3 and got accepted. (If she hadn't gotten accepted into her 1st choice wshe ould have been more than happy to attend any of them)

One thing about attending a women's college (no matter which one you go to) is that the men are not far away (Smith & Mouth Holy oke have the 5 college consortium so there will be men at UMASS, Hampshire & Amherst) Barnard- Columbia across the street (in assition to 8 million poeple in NYC) Bryn Mawr (Haverford & Swat as part of the tri-college in addiiotn to havein Penn , Drexel and Villanova close by)
One thing fro certain, if you attend any of the womens colleges you will get a great education, in an enviorment where you see that women can and are doing any/everything.

Whatever you decide, I wish you all the best

hopeful,
if bryn mawr is your school of choice, go for it. the women's colleges are amazingly supportive and nuturing communities. our D applied to and was accepted to smith & wellesley but opted for the coed experience since she attended an all girl secondary school--where she was lucky enough to have had great teachers. best of luck!

Thanks to all of you for your opinions and support!!!!
I'm just so nervous...I don't know how I can last until December when decisions come out. I am definately applying early decision to Bryn Mawr but still am not quite sure of my chances. Is it a match, a reach, or somewhere in between? And what do those terms mean...does a "reach" mean no chance? Thanks so much, this forum has really given me a lot of insight.

Hopeful,
we are calling Bryn Mawr a 'reach' because you are reaching a bit higher than your 'stats' - specifically gpa. In this situation, your application, essays, hs rec's, - and luck - will all be important in determining whether you are accepted, deferred or rejected. Since you are not 100% assured of acceptance, you should probably continue to work on your other apps once your Bryn Mawr app is tucked away. If the news in December is not good, you are all set. If the news in December is good - you can swear at the overly-cautious parents on CC for encouraging you to do extra work!

My feeling about the women's colleges is that they are looking carefully for a match and demonstrated interest in their candidates along with the usual academic and statistical profiles. If you can show them that you are a fit for their school and really want to go there, it would make a lot more difference than a few tenths of points on the gpa. Visit if you can, write a cover letter telling the schools what you like about them, have your counselor if he will, write and say you are looking at this type of school. All of these things can make a difference.

I'm applying to Bryn Mawr as well. Well I'm applying if i don't get into Wellesley to which i applied to Early Decision. I absolutely LOVE Wellesley, the people there are great, the campus is beautiful, the location is great, the course opportunities are also very good. Just hope i get in now. HeHe.

I am a Firstie at Mt Holyoke, and if you're really worried about it then you should do an interview. You're GPA might be a problem, but it really depends. I know someone here who had a 3.0 GPA and still got in, namely because of her extracirriculars and her circumstances in life (her father died while she was in high school, etc.)

This year Mt Holyoke 2008 has 575 students, but I hear that they will be accepting fewer people now because of the housing crunch. (More people are accecpting their acceptances at Mt Holyoke now) But I still feel as if you have a good chance.
