Chances for Womens Colleges

I was wondering if I had a chance at Smith, Wellesley, MHC, or BRyn Mawr...I may apply to one ED...I have a 1340 SAT (700 v, 640 m). I play a varsity sport and have won a few writing awards. My recs and essay will be good, but I only have a 3.25 gpa. This is from a competative private school, and I've held a b+ for the past two years. I know this will probably hurt my chances a lot....anyone know my chances? Thanks in advance.

I think you have a decent shot at Smith, MHC or Bryn Mawr - you should pick your favorite. Wellsley is tougher.

Thanks. Do you know if any of these schools would be considered matches for me, or are they all reaches?

My school also doesn't rank, I'm not sure if that helps or hurts my chances.

I don't usually answer chances posts, cause no one knows. But give it a shot. You might get defered to reg admission. Be sure your essays are really good. Check where your SAT and GPA are in relation to the average. I think they are mid to low. I do think Wellesley is harder. Smith sounds fantastic to me and is in a 5 college consortium. Don't fail to check out other women's schools like tiny Scripps where you have the advantage of being in the Claremont colleges. Good luck.

Hopeful: The only weak link is your GPA. However, there's a reasonable chance at Smith and a stronger one at MHC. Northampton is a quaint community...and the 5 college consortium is a big plus. Good luck!

Thanks...how about Bryn Mawr?

Smith and Bryn Mawr are reachy matches, I think MHC is more of a match. Playing the ED card is probably reasonable at any of these - if you are positive you like them. However, none will be a shoe-in, so pay careful attention to your RD schools.

One of the things I noticed last year was that the kids with GPA issues tended to get deferred and admitted, or admitted off a waitlist. What this means is... no senoritis for you! If you don't get it ED, life is not over - but don't let your grades slump. Its not over when you mail your apps! (BTW, my son gets this lecture too, so don't feel like I'm picking on you!).

One last thought - are you good enough at your sport that talking to a coach might be useful?

MHC is SAT optional. So if you really have stellar grades and some good EC, it would definitely be a match.

Hmmm...what about Bryn Mawr early decision. Then would it be a match? Or still a reach? If a school is a "reach" does that mean it's a sure thing, or just a little more likely? I'm so nervous...thanks for all your help, everyone.

I also took a couple college courses over the summer if that helps at all...I don't know, I'm desperate.

Anyone know my chances?

bump,bump,bump

Bryn mawr is a match/reach only becuase of gpa, wellesley is a reach, Smith is a match/reach and I don't know what MHC stands for

Is the 3.25 weighted or unweighted? That could make a big difference. What difficulty of classes are you taking? All/most AP? I visited Smith over the summer, and it is AMAZING... the atmosphere is great and the town is too. The five college thing is also a plus if you want to take some more detailed classes. Definitely check it out. I don't know if this matters, but I was told but admissions people that with my 1260 I had a decent chance at their engineering program(but I have a 4.5 weighted, 3.94 unweighted GPA and many, many extracurriculars)... Unfortunetly I don't think I am going to apply there though.

Thanks so much for answering!!!
My GPA is unweighted, my high school doesn't weight or rank. By graduation I'll have taken five APs and two college courses. I'm in a few clubs, do some community service, and play a varsity sport year round. I go to a pretty tough private school, and it has mostly been the math has brought me down. I'm really into Latin and English which I've heard Bryn Mawr is amazing in. I don't know if this information helps or not...please be honest with me, I know my GPA is significantly lower than most of these schools, but I wasn't sure if I had a chance at one (probably Bryn Mawr) early decision.

Hopeful09,
if Bryn Mawr is your favorite, be brave and give it a shot. If its a reach - so what. If you don't make it, at least you know you've tried. Over half the schools on my kid's list are reaches - he may only be accepted at his safeties. And that's ok, be because he's tried. From your post, you sound like a rather scholarly soul. If that is true, you and Bryn Mawr would be an excellent fit - hopefully, they will see that in your essays and interview.

BTW - you've got a bunch of mom's and thoughtful students on your thread - most of us are hesistant to give a chances percentage per say. But I think that everyone has said you've got a shot, just not a sure thing. That's what safeties are for!

Yes, you seem like a great fit for them all, but especially Bryn Mawr. May I ask what drew you to women's colleges? I'm interested in Bryn Mawr and Barnard and was just wondering why you chose to apply to them.

I visited Bryn Mawr and loved it, so I looked into other women's colleges. I visited Bryn Mawr only because it was a good school, not because of the single sex factor. I loved the atmosphere so much I looked into others...Bryn Mawr is probably the only one I'm seriously interested in appying to, but I thought I'd ask about others in case I didn't have a shot at Bryn Mawr, so I could try to find a school which seemed similiar. I had never considered an all girls school prior to visiting Bryn Mawr, but my guidance counselor suggested I give it a shot. During my visit, the lack of men seemed like a non-issue. My tour guide summed it up perfectly, saying "they're around when you want them to be, and away when you want them to be." It just seems like such an amazing school, I especially love the lantern night and other traditions. I really, really hope I get in. Celebrian, are you applying early to either Barnard or Bryn Mawr? Thanks everyone for answering my posts...I know "Can I get in" is a tough question to answer which nobody knows for sure, but it helps so much to talk about it and hear other parents' and students' opinions. I'm so nervous!!!!!

I'm only a junior, but even if I loved a school, I could never apply early (binding) because i'm such an indecisive person
