Hi I am very interested in getting an army rotc scholarship. Do you think I can earn one?

GPA: 3.8
5/7 of my classes are IB/AP
3 years of Football
5 years of IB German
Tae Kwon Do
Eagle Scout
CR: 690 M: 610 WR: 640
I coach a flag football team of 12-13 year olds
National Honor Society
German Honor Society
I get my ACT scores in at the end of April but they should be around 28-30 based on previous practice tests.
I referee basketball games (if that counts as some kind of "demonstration of leadership" I don't know)

Anyway, do you think that I can get one? If not what do I need to improve (besides my math SAT score)

Thank you

You have a decent shot…

I got the 4 year AROTC scholarship, the type 7 AFROTC scholarship, and didn’t get anything from the Navy.

I had a 3.97 unweighted GPA, 4.25 weighted GPA. My SAT score at the time I applied was 1330 M+CR (they don’t consider writing when evaluating SAT scores). I was vice president of one club as well as a strong member of two other clubs. I was a varsity athlete in three different sports, but never a captain. I had over 100 hours of community service (I organized and lead two school blood drives) and wrote a pretty good essay.

That being said…It has become extremely difficult to get these scholarships because of the budget cuts, which translates to less scholarships, so they’ve become extremely competitive.

My friend who did not get any of the scholarships had a 3.0 unweighted GPA, 3.3 weighted GPA, an 1100 M+CR on the SAT. He was an eagle scout and captain of the swim team. He had limited club involvement, but maybe 60 hours of community service.

Since you are inbetween me and my friend, but closer to my stats…you have a decent shot. I wish you the best of luck on your future endeavors and your scholarship application!

What was included in you army rotc scholarship (tuition etc.)? Also, where did you decide to go to college, and how much does that impact your chances at receiving a scholarship? What do I need to improve on the most? When is the best time to apply for these scholarships? Thanks for your input, it means a lot to me!

I was awarded the full tuition ROTC scholarship to Berkeley, however I did not get into Berkeley, so I had my scholarship transferred to UCSD. My scholarship includes a $1200 stipend for books and $400 per month for living expenses. No scholarship award from any service branch includes room and board. Some colleges may offer to pay for room and board as an extra incentive to use your scholarship at their school.

Depending on your stats you have a better chance of being awarded a scholarship at some institutions. For example, if you were interested in MIT, you probably wouldn’t have a great chance of receiving a scholarship, but if you were more interested in a state school, you would have a better chance of getting a scholarship because you have a better chance of gaining acceptance to that institution.

The Best time to apply for scholarships is early. I completed my apps and interviews the summer before senior year. This ensured that my profile was reviewed at each board and gave me a better chance of getting selected.

I would say work on your math scores. Any branch wants to see a competent math student. Your GPA is very good and so are your classes. Your club involvement is good, but always strive to be a leader and be in leadership positions. Also, keep working on your community service hours, those are more important than you think.

All in all, I believe you have a good chance. I don’t want to get your hopes up though…Remember, getting any scholarship is very competitive as I said before. If you have anymore questions, send them my way and I’ll do my best to answer them for you. Good luck!

Thanks! I did what you said and worked on my math scores. My scores from the June 1st SAT were awesome! A 1390! My CR stayed the same but I got a 700 math :D
