Chances me? -- Low GPA (HUGE Upward Trend), Great Standardized Test Scores and Essays

Wow. Good to hear :O. Does UIUC ignore freshman year or look at it lightly? My weighted GPA between soph and junior year is ~3.7.

and I can’t get into Berkeley or UCLA, so I’m considering some other out of states that I may have a better chance of being accepted into. That said, I’m still applying to Berkeley.

Hey! Similar situation here, low GPA good SAT and good ECs. You have some very interesting and unique ECs, which would make you stand out. The transcript will speak for itself of how you changed as a person so make the essay more interesting i would suggest. Don’t fall into the travel essay cliche, really describe the environment in india and how it impacted you.

Definitely will do! Thanks.

Colleges love upward trends, and with a good SAT, they will understand the hard teachers you have had, and will most probably favor you. But there is always a possibility that an admissions officer rejects your app (unlikely though). Just wondering, is your high school Monta Vista? 'Cause I live in Norcal too, and MV is a very crazy place to succeed lol.

Tiger, it’s similar ;)

Hey good stuff. based on the info provided by you and what gt says is the scores are for their this years freshmen, your standardize test scores are very solid and strong.
If you throw me your overall gpa (which is probably what is most considered for ‘grades’) and your total ACT/SAT score, I think I can get a better picture.
remember that gpa is only compared with the students at your school based upon the profile your school sends to gt. hence, i think you should tell us about where you are in your school (class rank).
Im the opposite position… My SAT is terrible but my grades are pretty good compared to the rest of my school, which is one of the top hs in our state.

Good luck! Chance me too plz :D!

Hey buddy.

My sophomore + junior weighted GPA is 3.7. Extremely low. IDK what it is including freshman year. In my original post, I provided an exact breakdown of my GPA.

I believe GT converts everything to SAT scale, out of 800. Here’s my breakdown:

Standardized Test Scores (GT takes scores from both ACT/SAT):
Math: 36 ACT Math (800 SAT converted score)
English: 35 ACT English (~780 SAT converted score)

Writing: 730 SAT Writing

Total: ~2310

School does not rank.

I’m in a similar boat.

Let me guess, you go to Mission San Jose?

You’re easily in. Your GPA puts you near the 70th percentile, but your test scores are much higher than average. Especially with your tech videos.

I seriously hope so! We’ll find out by Spring :)

Depends are you a part of your school’s newspaper?

Your excellent ACT should make up for the gpa. With good essays, you should be fine

Michigan does not superscore the ACT, so I would send in the September test (higher English and Mathematics scores).

Your GPA will really hurt. Your cumulative GPA for Freshman and Sophomore year is sub 3.0. Even Junior year remains under the Michigan standard of 3.8. You overall high school GPA is ~3.2. Applicants with sub 3.5 GPAs need very special circumstances to get in. You lose nothing by applying, but the odds are not good.

GPA makes U-M a reach.

You’ll probably get the same answers as you did when you posted the same question one month ago.

UCs see all test scores and focus on the highest single sitting score (not super score).

UCs also emphasize high school grades to a greater degree than test scores. Berkeley L&S (for L&S CS) would likely be a pretty big reach with your grades. Berkeley EECS would probably be even more of a reach.

Be sure to have other schools that are less of a reach on your application list, like other UCs, CSUs (SLO, SJ), Minnesota, Virginia Tech, Stony Brook, etc…
