You’ll probably get in if you apply to LSA. Engineering is a bit tougher; I’ve seen a few people with perfect/near-perfect test scores getting rejected last year.

you have the stats to get in, but unless you truly put time and care into your essays you wont get in…Michigan (mostly engineering) loves rejecting top students that do not have good essays

What the others said is correct. You have the stats, but Umich is not one of those schools where anybody can consider to be a safety school. For you, it would probably be a match school. Even with near-perfect stats, you can’t just assume that you will get admission just from submitting an application. If you put forth the time to make sure your application is great, you should be fine.

For your activities, the most important part is to be able to talk about them substantially. You won’t believe how many people assume that quantity is the most important factor. It is better to only have four or five activities where you can write a solid paragraph about your involvement, rather than 20 or 30 where you can only write maybe a sentence or two. Of the four or five, you should be able to write about half a page single spaced. Admissions officers can tell whether you are doing your activities for yourself (which is what they want to see) or for them (which is not what they want to see). The “check the box” attitude is not what they want to see.

I think you’re in. Obviously, you’re interested in medicine and have all of your ducks in a row academically. But what sets you apart, is the time you’ve spent volunteering in hospitals and in a cancer lab. That’s huge. That’s initiative. 250 hours of hospital volunteer work…is over a month of 8 hour days. That’s commitment. That’s assurance that you know what you want and have put in the hours to make sure. That’s the kind of excellence and generosity of spirit UMich prides itself on. Write your essays from the heart about your experiences working at the hospital. Don’t focus on how much you’ve done. Focus on the questions you’ve had to ask along the way. Focus on the decision moments, what guided you, where your motivation is coming from. If you write from the heart with humility, I feel very confident you’ll be accepted.

By the way, this is coming from the mom of a kid currently doing a pre-med curriculum at UMich. My daughter’s academic rigor wasn’t as stellar as yours. She didn’t have as many AP courses or as many ECs. But she did have a lot of experience working in a clinic, and was able to write beautiful, deeply human essays about how she chose her path and what it means to her. I firmly think being able to talk about those experiences…both from a clinical viewpoint, and with compassion and humanity…is what gave her an admissions edge. (and she was accepted EA)

@MaryGJ Thank you for the great words of advice! What does your daughter think of the pre-med program at UMichigan?

If you present yourself well, I think your chances at admission in the EA round are pretty good. I recommend only sending the SAT and not the ACT (unless you are required to do so).

Make sure to apply for scholarships too. Since your are in-state for UNC you should have several excellent choices. Michigan does not consider race in admissions.

Michigan’s admissions committee evaluates holistically; they have three supplements, which is more than what most schools require. Write supplements that demonstrate your fit and ability, and you should have a solid shot.

However, I should mention that my friends with higher scores than you still got rejected from LSA due to bad essays. Take your time and present yourself well

Hey guys I bumped up my ACT to a 34 composite ( E: 35 M: 34 R: 34 S: 31) and a 35 superscore (E: 35 M: 34 R: 34 S: 35). How do my chances for Michigan EA look now after taking these into account?

Very good

If I do get into Michigan, is it worth paying 80k more to attend over UNC-Chapel Hill? I know UNC is a great school, but I wouldn’t feel happy going there.

@therealdeal23, that depends on what you want to study and why UNC would make you unhappy. Looking at this strictly rationally, UMich would probably not be worth the premium in price but there are certain intangibles that only you can weigh.

See what happens with your financial aid. I wouldn’t go to a school that makes me unhappy.

@AdmissionsDean32 Ummmmm
You’re kidding right?

My daughter’s roommate at Michigan is from your school, and I don’t think her stats were as strong as yours.

they’re definitely kidding @UofMorMSU

Can someone chance me? To sum it up I have a 1460 SAT- 730 math 730 english (about a 32 act) and a 4.06 weighted gpa. I have strong ECs (captain of dance team, Edior in chief of newspaper, volunteering galore), and I’m a strong writer so I felt my essays were effective. However, I feel my stats are low and I may be rejected due to having a couple B’s on my transcript in my weaker subjects and mediocre scores. I have a sibling currently at Michigan, but I am unsure of how much this actually helps. I know it is a reach, but do I have any chance?
