Chances: NYU Tisch, BU, Emerson, Vassar. Just another Rising Senior in need of help!

With so many people on this website, I'm not sure if anyone will respond, but I can try!

Dream School: NYU Tisch - film production

Basics
Age:17
Gender: Female
Race: Caucasian
Location: rural NH,USA
Income Range: 35,000
Parents Divorced
Only 1 parent went to college
Other kids in college: My twin will be going to college the same year as I. I also have two other siblings

Academics
I've got a 3.6 GPA (unweighted) and a 4.5 GPA (weighted).
Freshman year: All A's in my classes except for a C+(78%) in gym class (which has killed my GPA) and a B (86.0%) in algebra 1
Sophomore year: All A's in my classes except for a B(85.9%) average in a year long English class and B-(82.5%) in gym class (again, gym class killed my GPA)
Junior Year: All A's in my classes except for a B+ (89.9%) average in Screenwriting

Even though my GPA isn't so hot, I figure my transcript shows improvement.. which is good... i think!
I take at about 5-7 classes per semester on a 4 class block schedule, so I'm pretty packed. My school is small, we don't have IB or AP credits, but i take every CP and Honors class I can get my hands on. My school requires 28 credits to graduate (the highest in the state) and I'm only two credits away from exceeding that minimum with my ENTIRE senior year left.

My senior year schedule is going to be the same, so no slacking.

Keep in mind I still have my senior year ahead of me.

I will apply early decision to NYU Tisch for film
I will apply to Emerson, Boston University, Vassar, School of Visual Arts, RISD,and Plymouth State University (safety school), as well as possibly a few others in Regular Decision time.

I would love if ANYONE could give me some tips for senior year and how to get into the colleges that I want! Thank you!

You’re GPA isn’t the problem, its your SAT scores that will give you trouble. A 3.6 is very respectable, and is good enough to get into BU and NYU Tisch. Vassar and Emerson are just low reaches, from a GPA standpoint. The average GPA for all of the colleges you mentioned is anywhere between a 3.5-3.85, so your GPA is good enough for almost anyone of them.

However, your SAT scores are not so hot. Since BU, NYU, Emerson, and Vassar are all top tier colleges, many students will be applying with a SAT score of over 2000. It would be great if you could get your SAT score over 2000, maybe even to 2050 - 2100.

Since most of these colleges accept people with a GPA anywhere between as low as 3.4-4.0, SAT’s are the real deciding factor. Improve your SATS, not the GPA

thank you so much for the great tip! I’ve been shooting for a 2000 or above, so hopefully! Thanks again.
If anyone has any other tips, I would appreciate it SO much! Thank you!

Tish will care more about your artistic evaluation as long as your academics are in the ballpark.

The fact that you have taken advantage – and then some – of what is offered by your community will be a huge plus in your favor, IMO. The schools look at how well a student does within their local environment.

I agree with the need to raise your SATs. You are at the 25th percentile for NYU. If there are students with equally competitive artistic profiles and grades, those students might be more likely to get the acceptance nod. Get your SATs higher up into the middle 50%ile to increase your odds. Tisch decision is weighted 50/50 artistic / academic. You are certainly in the ballpark, though, as Soze said.

Schools consider the “Academic GPA.” They will take gym class out of the transcript when reviewing your file, I believe.

Also, when you study for the SATs (which you will be doing this summer, right??), focus on the CR and M. Don’t worry about the writing; your score is pretty good, and the CR / M score is the more important one anyway.
