Hi, I'm going to be a senior this year. I've screwed around a lot my high school years, and "many" teachers have said I'm a bright kid and that I'm extremely underachieving. I'm a kid that likes to have too much fun and I have just woken up to realize how important my future is. My parents would like for me to stay at home for college. My choices are limited to a close by UC school or the dreaded community college then transfer technique.

My current GPA is 3.2 (this is with only one weighted class) For my senior year I will have two weighted classes. My SAT scores aren't that great either 1710, but were taken without taking any classes or prior studying.

Right now I am a lost little duckling that is willing to put off everything and try for the best. But, is it too late for me to pull it off? to get into a UC school?

Is there anything I can do? What I should focus on?

I want a community college to be my last resort.

I am an extremely good tennis player. 5.0 level for the people that know what that means. I was on varsity freshmen year, then I broke my arm and didn't play for my sophomore or junior year. Going to play my last year though, if that helps. I am also in the Vietnamese Youth Eucharistic Community, I've been told that it looks really good on an application. I am an active VSA member. Thanks for all the replies.

I know that you said that community college is your last resort, but hear me out.

You have a few choices right now. You can go to a "lower ranked" UC like UCR or UCSC. Once there, you could chose to either get your degree or transfer. Transferring from a UC to a UC is generally agreed upon to be a difficult option.

Or you can go to a community college. If you're hard working and bright, you could easily pull off the GPA necessary to transfer. Throw in an honors program, and you're pretty much a shoo-in for UCLA and UCSD.

Think about it. You can spend 2 years at a CC to have a degree at a higher end UC and have better opportunities for the rest of your life, or you can worry about your social life now.

Lol... sac state is the worst CSU! Anyway, you should check out some CSUs and also look at the lower UCs... I have a friend who got into UCSC with similar stats (but that was on the old SAT so yeah).

"UCLAri" GWC (a community college) has sent me a letter inviting me to take there honors program. I don't really understand what it means. If you want I can scan and photobucket it. I appreciate all the good feedback from all of you guys/girls.

"nadarboy2002" c'mon now. don't get my hopes up so much. but thanks though

Also, what is the GPA requirements from a JC to a UC. Like say from a community college to UCLA or UC Berkely?

Jeez I love this forum, all the people looking out for each other in such a time of competition in college. = ) God Bless ALL!!!!

Anyway, the honors program means that you take a few harder classes and get priority admission to certain UCs. In some cases, meeting requirements can mean guaranteed admission.

Oh ok, thanks. I guess I can't follow in my big sister's steps into Berkely. But, o well. I get it now, with the honors program. So what steps should I this summer, since I have like 3-4 months until applications are due. For example like essay, SAT classes, EC...etc.? Just opinions, no specific steps. But thanks again to all.

Oh and does the honors program affect the college GPA, like adding an extra 0.2, or does it just make you stand out for the admissions people to easily stamp your application with an "ACCEPTED"?

All the honors program does is make your application stand out...amongst the other thousands of honors applicants. Find out if it has any sort of transfer guarantee or not.
