Chances of admission to NYU, Ithaca College, Marymount Manhattan College, or ...

I'm planning on majoring in either Theatre or Musical Theatre, and I need to know if I'm measuring up, academics wise. If anyone have any advice/comments/tips on getting into any of these schools, your help would be much appreciated. (I'm also planning on applying to Carnegie Mellon and Kenyon College, but my title character maximum had already been met so I couldn't fit them into the title.)

I am a sophomore in high school, so I haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet, which I know are critical pieces of information, and I'll have the scores posted as soon as I take the tests and receive the scores.

I also participate in all of the school musicals, and this winter I will be co-founding our school's first drama club. I also take acting classes in the city.

Community Service: Working progress. I'm sorting out different ways to earn hours as we speak. I will be graduating with at least 60 hours. Probably more.

Special Awards: Working progress. I've won multiple awards when I was younger for the visual arts in the local arts festival and I've won a local poetry contest. I'm working on achieving more.

I have also been identified as gifted in the arts and academics in my state.

If anyone has any information that they feel would be helpful, please share it. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

With a 4.0 unweighted, if you can keep it up, it won’t be your grades that would be keeping you out. When you have your test scores, we can better say. But if you are looking to get accepted to an audition dependent MT program which is the case with all but Kenyon COllege, the audition is a major component for acceptance. Some of those schools only accept about 10 students each year, half of each gender, and have hundreds auditioning for those spots, even more.

So I suggest, looking at the MT board here, which is full of info on the process and particulars of a number of MT programs. You should also be thinking about the audition pieces and approach in the next year or so.

Thank you for responding!

I have been looking into monologues and audition songs as of late, and I’m planning on asking a few theatre professors and theatre students in my area for tips and advice. (There’s a small liberal arts university in my town and I know quite a few of the students and teachers there because one of parents works at the university.)

Thanks again!

Check out U Cincinatti, SUNY Purchase, and Muhlenberg, too.

If you’re taking CP Pre Calc, you shouldn’t take AP Calc, the jump will be too high. Plus, for musical theater, you wouldn’t need it. Precalc is all you need. However, see if you can get any AP art (Art History, and/or any of the 3 Studio Art classes), plus AP Music Theory. Can you take AP US History or AP Euro? It would “look” better than AP Psych (which is a very lightweight AP - better than a CP class, but not really “college level” at a selective college). AP English Lit would be better than AP English Language - see if you can take AP English Language as a junior, and AP English Litt as a senior?

Thank you!

I live in a rural area, and there are limits to the AP and Honors classes. We don’t have AP Music Theory, AP Euro, or AP English Literature.

We have AP Calc, AP Chemistry, AP Art, AP Psych, and AP English. (There are rumors of an AP U.S. History to be added, but nothing has been officiated.)

I can look into taking an Art History class (it’s not offered at my school, but I can take it online). I’m a little too late to take AP Art, unfortunately. I’m pretty set on taking AP Psych because I’m very interested in psychology, but I can look into working AP U.S. History (If the rumors are true) somewhere into my schedule.

Thanks again!

Hi! Yes, it is hard to advise you since we don’t have SAT scores but I think you are on a solid track! However, I do want to mention that I saw that you had an OVERWHELMING amount of Extracurriculars. I think your leadership positions in some are AWESOME but colleges don’t like you “spreading yourself thin” if that makes sense. Keep leadership and perhaps chose a few clubs to more fully invest yourself! Hope this helps! Best of luck

Thank you!

I have been considering dropping out of a few clubs at the end of this year. The hard part is deciding which ones to drop!

Thanks again!

Anyone else have any suggestions?
