Chances of admission

I’m wondering what my son’s chances are of being admitted. We live in IL so instate. He is a rising senior and he has an SAT score of 1480 (780 Math and 700 Reading/Writing). His GPA is 3.71 UW and 3.97 W. Class rank is 37/294. He has taken AP Physics, APUSH and AP Environmental Science. His senior year he is registered to take AP Chem, AP Calc BC, AP Computer Science, and AP Stats plus English, PE and a mobile app maker class. Junior year he got all A’s or A-‘s in his courses. He has gotten 1 C Sophomore year in Spanish 3 and all other grades where A’s and B’s. He wants to study mechanical engineering. So just wondering what his chances of being admitted are. Thanks.

It seems like a good match. The average SAT is 1280-1490, so your son is right in there. We visited and I loved the school! Good luck.

College of Engineering is a more difficult admit than the other UIUC school–stats for the class entering fall 2019 can be found here:
https://admissions.illinois.edu/Apply/Freshman/profile

SAT mid 50% is 1430-1540, so your son’s 1480 is somewhere between 25%ile and 50%ile. GPA is just below the 25%ile, but we don’t really know how they calculate the GPAs for purposes of this report.

Does your S’s high school have Naviance? That will give you the best indication of his likelihood of admission.

Along with BioEngineering and CS-Engineering, Mechanical is one of the most selective majors at UIUC. You can look at the ranges for individual majors here: https://myillini.illinois.edu/Programs/ComparePrograms . It looks like a good target major for your son on paper, but if he likes UIUC in general, he should definitely pick a less selective major as the 2nd choice on his application and have a safety school just in case.
