I was wait listed at the new england conservatory. I applied for undergraduate music composition BM. What are the odds of being accepted? The letter they sent said, "it was in my best interest if my admissions file was complete, and that no offer of admission could be made with out your official high school transcripts." As it turns out I had not sent them an official transcript. My school sent my transcript about a week ago so my file is now complete. Could that have been the reason I was wait listed or is that just wishful thinking?

You should call them directly and ask if you were competitive prior to the transcripts. Being a conservatory, NEC has minimal academic standards, (which you can view on their admissions website). My guess is that the transcript alone was not the sole reason you were waitlisted, but may not have made the cut based on audition or portfolio submission.

What were your other options/acceptances for composition?

FYI, there is a separate CC forum for music majors http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/

Yeah, I was accepted into a preparatory program for the st. petersburg conservatory, but aside from that nothing else…

St. Petersburg Conservatory in Russia, but not an actual conservatory admit? I’m assuming by your description, it was a conditional type of admit, with full admission contingent upon your development and success within that program. It’s an interesting option.

If you have no other domestic acceptances, I’d suggest talking to admissions at NEC and have them give you an objective honest assessment of why and where you ended up on the waitlist. Based on what they reveal, you may want to take a gap year, and continue to study with a private instructor and reapply to NEC (and some additional options) next year. NEC is a very tough admit, and draws some of the most promising composition candidates.

You might want to pursue your options in more depth in the music major forum. Plenty of experience and expertise there.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the advice I’ll contact nec in the morning and see what they think, but I bet they will give the same advice. A gap year might work out well enough…
