Chances of being admitted into PSU College of Earth & Mineral Sciences?

I don't really want to be that guy, but Penn State has been my dream college since I entered high school. I want to become a meteorologist for my career, and be apart of the legendary College of EMS (Which has always been my goal, and how I started following Penn State in the first place. Being from Southern rural Virginia where the Cavs, Hokies, Blue Devils, and Tar Heels rule, I'm probably the only fan within 50 miles of my area.) From what I've seen, their standards are high, as it should be, compared to other colleges around Penn State.

Here’s my resume:

SAT: 1320 (680 Math; 640 English)
GPA: 95.000 (unweighted)
Rank: 19 of 350 (weighted)
Extra:
4 years of a member of the HCHS ACE team (Scholastic Bowl)-District All academic team every year
DECA chapter Secretary
YoVaSO (Traffic Safety awareness)
FBLA (Region winner of Introduction to Financial Math
Church Youth Group (Volunteering)
YES for Schools (advocates for passing of a local 1% sales tax referendum for school funding)
National Honor Society Parliamentarian
School News Show Meteorologist
Peer Mediation- Reporter and Social Media Promoter
I also run a sports page for my high school’s sports (I might minor in Sports journalism)
State Residency: VA
Ethnicity:White
Gender: M

When I visited last month, it felt like home. When students greet alumni with “Welcome home” instead of “Welcome back”, you’ve found the right college. I would give anything to join the Penn State family; There’s been points in my life where my sole motivation was the ability to attend Penn State.

Your stats are great! My son loves the earth and minerals college as he is a freshman there. The alumni of that college are the best and he will only tailgate at the EMS tailgate to meet alumni.

What’s he majoring in? I feel like I’m going to love being a part of the EMS alumni. From what I’ve seen the EMS group is one of the biggest donors annually to THON, something I love watching on the live streams and can’t wait to be a part of. As if I didn’t have enough reasons to love this school!

His major is Petroleum Engineering.

I would recommend applying early as possible and hopefully all goes well!

It’s an amazing program. My S19 is a freshman Meteorology major. Meteo students jump right in to the program. In fact, his first class ever at PSU was Meteo 201 with Dr. Jon Nese - one of the best professors at State College.

He’s already had a broadcast on Campus Weather Service and he’s only been there for 8 weeks! The Weather Center on the 6th floor of Walker is like Meteo students’ own private club. It’s really special.

I would also highly recommend the Irvin Hall Special Living Option (SLO). It’s another way to make the giant PSU campus feel very very small. S19 loves it.

You have excellent stats (better than my son) and your enthusiasm shines through. If you haven’t already, apply NOW and be willing to start in the Summer (although I don’t think it will be necessary for you).

Best of luck and DM if you have any further questions.

Adding: Here is the Campus Weather Service site. Meteorology students do the broadcast all day long. It’s fun to watch. http://campusweatherservice.com/

  1. Submit TODAY. Do absolutely what you must to submit today. The SRAR alone will take you 1 hour… Hopefully you have your essay written, but all in all your course rigor*, GPA, and test scores will be most of the decision. The priority deadline is today and submitting later decreases your odds.
  2. Meteorology is quite selective so check “summer session” as a 2nd starting point if your parents can afford to send you.
  3. I’d say it’s a good match, probably 60% chance of admission.
  • Very important: have you taken Precalculus/Precalculus Honors? Calculus (honors, AB, BC)? Bio, chem, physics? In particular, AP Physics 1 and/or 2? Physics Honors?

Hey, I don’t really have any information for you but as a Penn State alum I wish you the best of luck! I am rooting for you…keep us updated!
