Chances of being admitted?

I'm planning on applying to UCR in 2011, and I was curious what my chances were. If anyone could give any honest feedback on what they think my chances are, that would be great. Thanks.

just as a side note, though, all courses with the term "essentials" or "Algebra/Geometry" are one step below college preparatory, so they're just lower level classes. Everything else is college preparatory. I heard that this would be a big factor in my chances, but... anyway.

if you have 3.5 gpa and 1700 sat(plus u have job experience and multiple club activities), i would say that you have really good chance of being admitted.

is it possible to make up the D’s in freshman year? colleges dont like D’s. My friend had decent gpa (3.45) and decent sat score and got rejected. Im almost sure that the reason is that she had D’s

I think so, but I would probably have to make up the entire course, and it might not even count as a letter grade but rather a “pass/fail.” Would the D’s really affect my chances that much?

And also, I don’t mean to sorta’ ask the same question twice, but would the lower level classes I’m in affect me that much? Like the Essentials of Bio/Chem/Physics and Algebra/Geometry? Or would they look at it as more or less the same?

i do not know if it would matter that much but better safe than sorry. I am not that knowledgeable about east coast grading but at CA we just have 2 semester grades that we use to apply at UC’s. I do not know how your grades corresponds with that.

Since you said you would be applying as history major, lower level classes in math and science would be “ok” and i see that your taking AP history, which is great. If you can get into AP English, that would be better.

and be sure to pass the ap test ;)

Yeah its pretty much impossible to be rejected by UCR if you meet their requirements.

A lot of people say that UC’s are not worth going to if you’re out-of-state (because of the extra tuition cost) or something.

Just curious, I’m not trying to be rude or anything, but why UCR? Aren’t there a lot of great schools in the East Coast??

Anyways, if you meet the UC requirements then you’ll most likely get into UCR.

ucr accepts everybody (mostly everybody i would honestly say 98%) who meet UC minimum requirements

ktn09 - I sort of like the idea of just being a while from home. The way I see it is that I’d be in one of the top educational systems in the world, and have access to UCLA/Berkley professors (or perhaps I’m wrong, there?) and at the same time be close to some family. Plus, with my grades I’d have a hard time getting into any decent school around here.

Lawcha - like the problem is that I don’t think I meet the requirements - I’m not in all college preparatory classes, and I may or may not obtain an A-G gpa of 3.4 by my junior year - I may wind up with something like a 3.2, or 3.3. I’m not sure - I mean, does UCR require all college preparatory classes? Or are they more lenient with the levels of classes and moreso concerned with the classes and grades?

UCR is pretty lenient on levels of classes. taking just a couple AP classes is fine. Try to take like 2 in your senior year

UC’s want more out of state students now because of the budget problem in the Sate education system. But, I think that mostly applies to top UC’s like LA or Berk; it might apply to UCR.

abc912- what about schools in your state? UCR out-of-state tuition may not be worth it if you live in a state with solid schools

he said he wants to live away from home and be close to some family.

I don’t think the essentials classes matter too much - I took Algebra I my freshman year because I switched from private middle school to public high school and it was just never taught in the curriculum. I think they just want you to meet the California A-G requirements (or most of them, sometimes they don’t line up exactly) and you’ll be fine.

Your grades show an upward trend, so that’s really good (I went from a disastrous junior year to a way better senior year, academically). Keep it up and do well on the SAT and AP tests and you’ll probably get in. Again, I think we’re a bit more lenient with class levels and more focused on grades/scores.

As for the accessibility to UCLA/Berkeley professors - I would say that you do have access, but it probably won’t be in a direct way. You’d probably know a UCR professor who could refer you to a colleague at UCLA/Berkeley. In terms of library resources, we have a good UC-wide circulation system. You can get resources from any UC campus if you request it at UCR.

I think you should be fine… I got a 3.6 with 1680 on the SAT? My SAT II scores were nasty. 750 chinese… 510 math II? 590 history? I don’t even remember. lolol.

As someone said before, as long as you meet UC requirements, I’m pretty sure you’d get into UCR. My essays weren’t even all that convincing. In fact, I didn’t even apply for UCR. They sent me an email telling me to apply for free… and I was like hm, why not? Funny thing is… I’m attending UCR now. LOLOL.

What about UCR’s summer academy? If I were to attend, how much would that increase my chances of admission? Would that chance change if I went to a program at a local university instead?

Don’t worry about making up Freshman year classes.
UCs in general don’t calculate Freshman year in for your UC GPA.
That won’t hurt you.
Just make sure you have all your A-G requirements met and you should be fine.
