I am a sophomore in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. I am very interested in pursuing a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering after I graduate. I realize an important aspect of a Grad School application is showing my research experience. I have done research through UROP for 2 years, and did research during my first summer through a Fellowship program at UofM (I will be part of the same program for research this summer as well). Next summer, I would like to participate in an REU somewhere outside UM with a very good Materials Science and Engineering Program like MIT, Northwestern, etc. What are my chances of being accepted into such selective programs with a GPA of 3.66, the research experience I have already discussed, a publication/authorship, and a very good statement of purpose?

You’re going the right direction. REU applications are really tough to guess, though. The only REU I was accepted to was from a school I had never heard of prior to researching REUs. For grad school I was still able to get into a number of top-10 programs.

For the record, I was also in MSE.
