Chances of getting in anywhere with LOW gpa

Hi. I'm a senior in highschool. I haven't really taken school seriously up until my senior year which really sucks for me. As of right now my gpa is a 1.8. If I continue getting all As for the rest of the year it can go up to a 2.3. Would any place accept me w/o having to go to community college first?

Congratulations for taking the initiative to review your commitment to your high school academics and achieve all A’s so far this year!

With respect to trying to figure out a college that would accept you without having to go to community college first, there are many variables beyond GPA which would need to be considered. Some of these include: what, if any, standardized test scores you have received (ACT, SAT I, SAT II); the rigor of the classes you have taken; do you have enough credits in the courses required for college admission (typically 4 years English, 3 years math with at least algebra I, 2 years science with lab, etc); what types of extracurricular activities or volunteer work have you done; is there an underlying reason for your low GPA (e.g. major illness, family or personal hardships).

Figure out what type of college you would like to attend then work backwards in figuring out how to get there. The types of schools which you might get accepted to straight out of high school with a 2.3 GPA would be very different from those you might get accepted to if you went to community college, received a 4.0 GPA and added some volunteer work or a focused extracurricular which highlight your interests to your application “resume”. A successful turn-around is always impressive to a admissions committee when underscored with the test scores, grades, EC and recommendations to support that story. Some states have a guaranteed transfer program from local community colleges into their state colleges and universities so make certain you check for the policy for your area.

Whatever you do, don’t get discouraged by the process. You sound like you have made significant forward strides toward your ultimate goal of getting into a 4 year university. It may seem like a longer pathway, but remember it is possible to get a Bachelor’s degree in four years by going the 2yr community college route then transferring for your junior/senior college years at a 4 yr school. To do so, however, requires solid planning, focus and determination.

Once again, congrats on the tremendous improvement in your grades and good luck!
