Chances of getting in

Hi all,

I am an International student, currently studying 12th Grade in the United Arab Emirates in a school which follows Indian curriculum CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education).
I want to do a dual degree in Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering.

I just wanted to know what my chances are in getting admission into UMich, Ann Arbor, UVA, UIUC and University of Notre Dame and Vanderbilt University.

I dont have GPA grading in my school. The grading is purely based on marks obtained:
9th - 85%
10th - 90%
11th - 80%

I had also recieved a half-fee scholarship in grade 11.

ACTIVITIES :
I have been selected to attend the Global Young Leaders’ Conference (GYLC) in Washington/New York this year.
Swimming
Singing
Made Robot for science exhibition
Created a presentation on the periodic table
Helped the team in coming 3rd in an inter-school robot competition
Part of the school Anti-Smoking Committee
I have been learning Indian Carnatic Music vocal for over 10 years and have give a 2 and half hour concert. I have also been learning Carnatic Music violin for over 3 years.

SAT SCORES:
MATH - 700
CR - 600
WR - 600
Planning to give it again to improve my score.

Going to give SAT II's in November. Will get above 750 in maths, physics and chemistry.

Teacher Recommendations will be really good. Not sure what the school counsellor will write (but got info from previous school mates in US universities that we usually get really good recs).

Am going to start working on the essays when the apps are released and HOPEFULLY they should be good.

Will appreciate all responses. good as well as bad.

Thanks all.

Extra Info:
My school does not give GPA but if it gave my GPA would be as follows:
9th - 3.7+ (coz i got A's in all my subjects)
10th - 3.7+ (coz i got A's in all my subjects)
11th - 3.2 - 3.4 (coz i got a few A's and a few B's in my subjects)

Please give your opinion.

Ehhhhhhh it's hard to judge International students because they don't see the grade inflation at their schools that American universities have. SATs are a bit low, but they are in-range. Do you have a class rank? GPA is important, but if you are international and don't have the grade inflation, the class rank will be equally as important I believe. Perhaps Alexandre could help you, I believe he's some sort of alumni representative for UAE applicants or something. I'd say it's a match/reach for you, you have good ECs.

Sudu, your grades cannot easily be translated into GPA since you attend an Indian school. Have students from your school with similar grades been admitted into Michigan this year? Which school do you attend? Modern High School? St Mary's?

At any rate, given the information you provided us, I'd say most school on your list are slight reaches, which the exception of UIUC, which is more like a match.

i thought my GPA was out of 4

and ppl from my school with same grades as mine did not even apply to UMich .... they applied to places like Duke, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, Cornell and got accepted

Yes, but did those students also have 600s in the W and V sections of the SAT? Remember, although Michigan accepts a higher percentage of students, the mean SAT scores and GPAs are almost identical to those of CMU and Cornell students.
