Chances of Getting Into Good Universities? (Sophomore)

Hi,

My friend asked me if I could create this post for her regarding college chances since I have a CC account. She has become an anxious pupil like myself. We’re both sophomores, by the way.

Here are her stats:

  • Female
  • ranked 36/329 (in the top 25%)

Freshman year

  • spanish 2 (honors) = A
  • world literature = A
  • philharmonia strings = A+
  • modern world history = A
  • algebra I = A-
  • physics = B+
  • personal finance/research and writing (half-year courses) = A+

Sophomore year

  • spanish 3 = A

Her dream school is NYU, and mine is too. She does not know what she wants to be yet. She is thinking of majoring in the medical or business field. She might go to college as undecided.

Thanks for your feedback!

  1. We don't know your test scores or GPA so that makes chancing you very difficult
  2. She needs to find some ECs/volunteering opportunities

You should both come back to this site next year when you have more information.

It’s too soon for you to post a chance thread. Don’t panic just do your best at school and remember that with hard work nothing is impossible.

I don’t think of NYU as being that selective. I do think of NYU as being horribly expensive. My one comment on your friend’s curriculum / grades is that her transcript lacks rigor. She only plans on taking one AP junior year, the most competitive students would have 4 or more by that point. Also, applying to selective colleges with no extracurriculars really does not position a student very well

^ Can’t say that about APs with any kind of certainty. If your school only offers one AP, then the most competitive students will take one AP.

@Roxbury_resident

Oh gosh, that’s what I forgot to include! Sorry about that, lol.

Her cumulative GPA is a 3.5 and she has not taken the SAT or ACT test yet, but she will take it next year as a junior! This year, she received a PSAT score in the mid 900’s. She does not remember for sure.

I will definitely come back to this thread when we have more information, and I’ll tell her to get her own CC account! Thanks

@asaltbb

Thank you for the advice! We both appreciate it.

@Wje9164be - My friend plans on taking two senior year (AP Psychology and AP Literature and Composition), but it is too early to decide on that decision. Like, this time last year she said that she would take AP Human Geography and AP Language and Composition in junior year, but she only signed up for AP Lang. She fears that she will wreck her reputation if she takes challenging courses like myself, but she believes that she is starting next year with more honors and an AP. I agree with you on that comment. My friend is also pretty lazy (she told me to add that part for laughs, haha) but will maybe try EC’s next year. She says thank you for the advice!

@bodangles - Just to clarify, our school actually runs an open enrollment system. Basically, anyone can take any classes they want to, as long as they know they will put in the work. Most of the AP courses are enrolled at my school, except courses such as AP Seminar and AP Japanese, lol.

Tell your friend that AP human geo is really easy. Also a PSAT score of 900 is…rough. If she wants to get into NYU she needs to do some serious test prep.

And she should try to take more honors/AP if the school offers them and do more ECs

@annana - Alright, will do! Thanks so much!
