Basic stats (junior right now, will be senior next year):
4.3 GPA weighted, 4.0 unweighted, 31 ACT (will take again in september)
In the Health Sciences Academy at my high school, which is a specialized program dedicated to teaching medicine (going for bioengineering degree)
Member of Medical Honor Society, tennis team
Captain of Scholastic Bowl Team (won district tournament this year and qualified for regional tournament)
Junior year classes: AP English 11, Pathophysiology I, AP Physics B, AP Psychology, AP Calculus BC, AP US History (all A's)
5 on AP Euro exam last year as well
U of I is one of my top choices because of its engineering department and the fact that there's a slew of appealing merit-based scholarships which dont require additional application. Assuming that I got the ACT score up (probably will since that was my first time taking it), what are my chances for getting in to the Engineering college and how much would they give out in aid (Engineering Visionary Dcholarship, University Achievement)? I'm out of state (Virginia), white male, family makes over $100,000 a year so FAFSA doesnt look like it'll give much.

You should really expand your school list. They should include privates that are known to give out lots of merit aids. Schools like Case and Rochester have great Engineering programs (Case is especially great in BME) and are known to reward top students with lots of merit aid. Also look at JHU and CMU. I’m sure there are others.

My point is that for UIUC engineering, you are barely average talkless of getting any substantial merit aid. UIUC is very stingy with their merit aid and since you are out of state and with the financial situation the state is now, they will admit you with the anticipation that you will bring in the much needed out of state tuition. During my own college applications, my two friends who were URM instate students who got into Stanford could not get any merit aid from UIUC. They got generous merit aid from lots of top private colleges.

Since your family makes too much for much/any FA, if you need money for schools, then you need to apply to SEVERAL schools that will give you merit…including a couple that will FOR SURE give you merit for your stats.

mid range for UIUC
ACT Composite: 26 - 31

My neighbor’s kid had an ACT 34 and a 4.0…and got no merit from UIUC in engineering. So, I don’t know who/why certain kids get merit. Maybe they only choose from the pool of ACT 35/36 (and similar SAT). And, each one may not get much or anything.

When you say that UIUC engineering has a “slew” of scholarships…well, some require demonstrated need…and some have other limitations…such as for females only…or minorities…or from a certain state…or from a certain Illinois city.

You can apply and see what “might” happen…but if your family won’t pay the $40k per year for you to go there, then be sure to apply to some schools where FOR SURE you will get merit scholarships for your stats.

How much will your parents pay? If you don’t know ask.

Is UVA your financial safety? Have your parents said that they will pay all UVA’s costs???

WHY??? That is such a very limiting undergrad degree. If you’re pre-med as well, then that is soooo not necessary.

The estimated COA at UIUC College of Engineering for 2011 OOS freshmen is not $40K, it’s over $47K. That will certainly go up for 2012.

Two friends had IS kids admitted there, one this year, one last. Both were NMFs. Not a nickel of aid for either. One’s going to Princeton with substantial FA, the other to Texas A&M for a total cost of about $3K per year.

Thanks for the correction. I don’t know why I typed $40k…I know it’s higher. LOL

I’m from Illinois and I doubt you’ll get aid. Apparently the UC schools in CA don’t give aid to OOS students…and frankly, Illinois is doing as horrible as CA economically, so I doubt they’ll give any aid to OOS.

Yeah I’m from Illinois too and while U of I has an excellent Engineering program, they are known for being stingy with merit aid…
