Chances of Landing a Career in Marketing?

I will give a brief overview before I ask the questions I have. I am prepared for the cold, hard truth so be honest with me. Any/ all answers are much appreciated:

I am currently a senior scheduled to graduate next semester as a Psychology major with a minor in Business Administration.

I will be honest, my resume is not stellar compared to some but I have served as a social chairman for one of the largest fraternity chapters in the nation where I was responsible for new member recruitment, event planning, etc. I am currently working for a highly respected law firm— a position that I have held for 3 years in my time as a student.

My original plan was to attend law school after graduation but after doing a lot of thinking I have decided that I am more interested in pursuing a career in the Marketing field.

So my questions are:

  1. What are the odds of me landing a marketing job as a psychology major?
  2. What kind of skills could I learn / things could I do outside of school to boost my resume in the eyes of potential employers in this field?
  3. (This might be an obvious question to some) but, if I want to go the marketing route should I consider attending graduate school for psychology?
  4. Any other tips/ feedback

If you have read this far I sincerely appreciate your time and I am grateful for any insight that you may be able to provide.

Sorry, thought I saw this was posted in DFW. I erased my comment as it most likely isn’t relevant.

  1. Not bad...you've got prior work experience for a respected law firm. You can talk about how that's relevant/transferable to a marketing job. It's really about networking, connecting, and being strategic about applying now. Make sure you go to career fairs, connect with your college's career services center.
  2. An internship specifically in marketing, maybe some freelance marketing work if you could find it. If you're still at the law firm see if you can do some work that's at least related to marketing.
  3. Probably not? I mean, if you are interested in marketing you should first see what kind of job you can get with just the BA. Later on down the track you may decide you want an MBA or an MS in marketing. Graduate school in psychology isn't the most direct path there...you can work in marketing with a higher degree in psych but if you already KNOW you want marketing, it's better to study marketing.
