Chances of me getting into Andover, Hotchkiss, Cate, Choate, Lawerenceville?

Hi this is rocking star. I am from Korea and I go to a international school. I am wondering if I can get into these schools listed at the title.(Andover, Hotchkiss, Cate, Choate, Lawerenceville?) So, I will briefly list some grades and EC's.

1-5 grade: Basically a good-excelent score.
6th grade:
Basically, overall
Math: b plus
Ela: A, A-
Science: a plus
Art: A plus
PE:A
Music: A
Chinese:A
Social Studies: A plus
(Grades are safe)

EC: Only one: Recycled Art

Awards (MS): Social Studies Award

I still have 2 years and I believe I can achieve my goal. My SSAT's, I am studying for it right now taking course at Princeton Review(for ELA), I have a tutor for math and I go to a Art club near my house. I am interested in dancing, drawing art, sculpting, writing. I will try to participate in more EC's. Overrall, I think my grades aren't too bad...I am kind of shy, quiet..Do you think I can get in after I take the SSAT's and get a good grade? What more should I try to do?

PS: I play the cello, too, but i am not that good lol

I’ll answer, I might as well help. I’ll break it up into three sections: Grades, EC’s, and anything I didn’t cover.

To be honest, your grades are great and you take Chinese in 6th grade? My school never offered anything like that. Your grades are great, just remember, the AOs will mainly look at grades from 7th grade and 8th grade. But it looks like you’re off to a great start.

For EC’s, I recommend expanding on your interests. See if you could get into some sports, clubs, or maybe just some volunteer work. I can tell you that AOs love kids who are involved in their community.

You should do pretty well on the SSATs! I wish I had two years to prepare! Anyways, it looks like you’re going to score pretty high. Also, I have the same personality as you. Quiet, shy, and remember in your interview to be yourself. Don’t try to talk like you’re reading off a script.

Overall, this looks like an amazing start. Everything looks pretty good. Try to participate in more EC’s as it can determine if you’ll be a student there. These schools are very selective which could be unfortunate. I know that Andover has an acceptance rate of like 12%? Around the low teens. I’m applying to 10th grade this year to some schools.

Sorry for writing so much, I didn’t mean to put you to sleep. I got some free time right now hahaha.

Good luck!

As an International, you’ll have a good chance if you don’t need finanical aid.

Being from Korea may actually hurt you, as that nationailty is well-represetned in the top BS, and these schools are trying to achieve geographic diversity.

Please refer to my response to this other poster from Asia:

Hi I’m from singapore. I go to a top independent school here and I was wondering if I could get into andover with these qualification. I’m currently in grade 8.

I’m a straight A student

Volunteer work: gone to cambodia twice to help orphans, volunteered as a pharmecitical technicians assistant and as a nurses assistant, help raise funds for riding for the disabled association, helped poverty stricken students in hong kong.

Awards: 2 awards in improvements in academics and topped my class each term last year.

Others: specially picked by vice principal for hong kong exchange programme

EC: animation

I will be sitting for my ssats at the end of this year.do you think if I do well for my ssats at the end of this year I will be able to qualify ? I might opt for financial aid

@Midnight, Your chances, as a Singapore national (not an uncommon nationality at the top BS’s) of being awarded Financial Aid, are close to zero, unless you have some unbelievably, extraordinary hook (e.g. Olympic-level athlete, Cannes Film Festival award-winning film-maker, discovered a vaccine for Dengue Fever, etc.).

You have some nice community-service activities in your CV, and you should definitely mention those activities in your application. But those activities are probably not exceptional enough to merit FA for a int’l applicant from a well-represented country.

What are my chances without financial aid? Is it still pretty low ?

If you continue getting A’s, don’t need FA, and you do well on the SSAT, do well in your interviews, and write compelling application essays, then your chances are pretty good.

It also helps to be a boy.

@Midnight actually Andover is need-blind when in comes to financial aid. So as someone who currently attends Andover, the “feel” is more important than you might think. When they are looking at people to accept they want to know that they are just NICE, REAL people. So in your essays and interviews make sure you set yourself apart from the pack, by showing them what kind of person you are and not just telling them every single thing they’ll already read in your application. Obviously grades are still really important and you are clearly doing very well in school. Also if you can, try to get into at least the 90th percentile on your SSAT. Also doing a sport may help, but if you’re not athletic then I wouldn’t worry about it. Life isn’t all about doing things to build your resume!

With two years to go, you could work on a sport…cross country, track, squash. For ideas, check the team pages on the websites of the schools that interest you.

@midnight, you need to be realistic about your chances of getting into Andover. Next to Deerfield, Andover has the 2nd lowest admission rate.

I currently attend l’ville and I think you’d probs get into l’ville if you keep up with your good gpa, get a good ssat score (>2250), and a good toefl (>100). Good luck (in two years I guess)!

I’m from New Zealand and Japan (Both passports) but live in Thailand. Does that make me diverse?
